Overview

Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini is a sequel to the first season of Darker than Black, despite involving a new main character and conflict. It premiered on October 8th, 2009. Many of the characters from the first season return as supporting characters or antagonists while introducing a host of new characters. Hei, the series' previous main character, acts as a mentor for Suou Pavlichenko, the new protagonist.

Story

The series starts in Russia with Suou escaping an organized militia attacking her father's research lab. Hei, currently on the run from the Syndicate after betraying them in the first season, ends up in Russia on the hunt for an artifact that leads him to Suou, where they run away from the militia together. New organizations using Contractors have arisen and fight for control as they hunt down Hei, the feared "Black Reaper". An accident leads Hei to lose his powers as a Contractor and Suou gains said power, allowing her to summon an extremely long, high-caliber sniper rifle. Acting as her mentor, Hei teaches Suou the skills needed to be a Contractor as they flee Russia for Tokyo.

Suou (周防・パブリチエンコ) is the series' protagonist. She is a 13-year old born in the city of Vladivostok where she lives with her father and brother, Shion. In the series, she turns into a Contractor due to an accident and finds trouble balancing her playful, childish nature with the neutral mind process of a Contractor. Her twin brother, Shion, is also a contractor. Suou's Contractor abilities lets her summon a PTRD-41 Sniper Rifle out of a Meteor Shard necklace her brother gave her before escaping her home. It is never explicitly said that the Sniper Rifle is her exact Contractor ability, the rifle is it's only manifestation as of yet.

Hei

Hei
Hei

Hei (黒) is the main character of the first season and returns as a supporting character. He is on the run from the Syndicate after the events from the end of the first season and now works as an operative for the CIA. After running into Suou due to a mission given to him by the CIA, they both flee the area together and run into a group of contractors chasing after Suou, who they believe to be her brother Shion. Hei is caught in a anti-Contractor field and loses his powers. Suou is also caught in the same field, awakening her powers. Hei is depicted as a grizzled, possibly-depressed alcoholic, although Suou gets him to get rid of his alcohol abuse later on.

Shion Pavelichenko (師恩・パブリチエンコ) is Suou's twin brother. He loses his right eye in a meteor crash that turns him into a contractor. His remuneration is the loss of his legs, which confines him to a wheelchair. Shion is later shown rising from his wheelchair and walking, saying to his father that he has finished his renumeration. His power is to create physical copies of things, whether it be objects or humans. But it shows later on that he used the help of a meteor fragment to create people, like Suou and his own dad. The meteor fragment is explained to boost his ability as a contractor.

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is mainly shown as a front for Section 3, an operation group formed of mostly contractors and an armed tactical army. It is established 2 years after the events related to PANDORA in the first season and exist to eliminate left over members of the Syndicate.

She returns by resigning from her title as police detective and joins Section 3 under the alias of Ichinose Yayoi. She is paired with 3 members, 2 of them being contractors. Misaki aims to find Hei for reasons unknown as of yet, though it his heavily implied that she has feelings for him.

Genma Shizume (釶目弦馬) is part of Misaki Kirihara's squad in Section 3 under the title of "Third Chief Clerk in the 2nd Investigative Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' Statistics Bureau". He is also a Contractor, despite expressing himself in a fairly emotive manner. His ability is to use any sort of element or object around him to form a protective, golem/tank-like armor. It increases his attack's power and makes him bulletproof and nearly indestructible. His remuneration is a Chinese medical therapy method known as Moxibustion. He practices traditional Bujutsu.

Mina Hazuki

Mina Hazuki (葉月水無) is a Contractor and is part of the Section 3 covert squad along with Misaki and Genma. Her ability is to turn any object into bladed weapons, which she can then wield or use as projectiles. Her fighting style is quick and precise, using retractable wires similar to Hei in her combat. She will often be seen fighting with a half-faced balaclava and go about a 'wet job' approach to her targets. Her renumeration is to lustfully kiss a man, which she despises due to "bad aftertaste". She will usually go to the length of kissing a female just to remove the taste. It's this along with her very close physical encounter with Misaki that would lead to speculation of a lesbian interest in her.
