Hugh Anthony Disward inherits his late bibliomaniac grandfather's estate. In his will he entrusted Huey with his book collection, the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian, and Dalian. The anime follows the adventures of Huey and Dalian as they search for the Phantom Books and seal them.

 Hugh Anthony Disward | Hugh Anthony Disward, a former pilot that served under England's Air Force during The Great War, inherits his late grandfather's estate and vast collection of books. Hugh's grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, also included in his will that Hugh must become the guardian of La Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian, as well as care for Dalian. Dalian eventually gives Hugh permission to become her Keykeeper, and hence, the ability to access the demonic Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian. With his power as Keykeeper and with Dalian's help, Hugh is able to seal the demonic Phantom Books, which is now his responsibility after his grandfather's death. |
 Dalian | Dalian is the custodian of the demonic Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian. She used to live with Hugh's grandfather, but after his death, she was entrusted to Hugh. Dalian is very fond of books and reading, and loves eating sweets and baked goods. Dalian is also very outspoken, and has a rather sharp tongue. She accompanies Hugh on their quest to search and seal the Phantom Books. |
