An overzealous firefighter who was nearly died in fire as a child before being rescued by a firefighter. He has grown up to be a gifted firefighter with superb instincts who is considered to be either incredibly lucky or incredibly stupid (or both by his comrades).
When he was six years old, a fire broke out at his home and Daigo instinctively ran into the inferno to rescue his puppy Giles and was trapped by the flames. Unable to breath from the hot smoke, his skin broiling from the intense heat; Daigo collapsed, convinced that he was about to die when salvation came from a valiant firefighter who came smashing through a wall and saved him. A barely conscious Daigo could only see a blurry face smiling down at him as the firefighter ruffled his hair and proclaimed that he had some guts in saving his dog and that he was a firefighter too. Since that incident, Daigo has always admired firefighters even as he drifted through life and high school, becoming a well known delinquent and often getting into fights.
In his Senior Year however, a newly graduated teacher Shizuka Ochiai arrives on her first teaching assignment and Daigo is instantly smitten with the beautiful teacher. Ochiai impresses Daigo to think about his future and inspires him to remember his childhood dream to become a firefighter. With her help, he manages to study and pass the difficult credential examinations to enter firefighter school.
His training is marred by a fierce rivalry with an obnoxious student Shiro Amakusa and the pair often get into fights during their training exercises. Upon graduating, Daigo is assigned to Medaka-Ga-Hama (Fire Company M) where he is dismayed by their lackluster behavior and slothful ways which he blames the laidback Captain Gomi who appears to be a regular salaryman who is simply killing time until he retires. Daigo is horrified to discover that his district is actually renowned for being one of the slowest and sleepiest fire stations in the city with it's "M for Merry Firefighters".
But his first emergency call leaves him terrified and makes him wonder if he is actually fit to be a firefighter at all when an alert is called for his old high school and discovers that among those teachers missing is Ms. Ochiai. Searching the school, he manages to pull out a victim, the school nurse when a collapsing ceiling buries him and cuts off his escape route. Fortunately, he is saved by Captain Gomi who admits that Daigo has some guts and a dazed Daigo abruptly realizes that his current Captain was the same firefighter who saved him all those years ago. Bitterly, a humbled and shamed Daigo vows to become a true firefighter just like Captain Gomi.
