A week before the prefectural tournament Momoko is really fired up, thinking Umishou might have a chance this year. She asks Amuro if she knows the rules, since she is the star. Amuro tells she knows them and starts training. But, after jumping into the pool, Amuro loses consciousness and has to be dragged out of the pool. Momoko wonders if she got cramp in her leg, when Amuro regains consciousness and tells the others that when hitting the water, she suddenly felt really weak. Makio notices something is different about Amuro and when Kaname gives her a closer look, he notices one of her X-shaped hairpieces is missing. Takeda claims he saw the X getting blown away by the wind, when Amuro jumped into the pool. Makio does not believe there is a connection between the missing X and Amuro feeling weak, but Ikamasa claims the X is a device controlling her movements. When Momoko says they just have to find the missing X, if it is the reason, Kaname spots it floating in the air. Trying to catch it, he trips and falls against Momoko’s back. As she kicks him for it, he explains he was trying to catch the X and when Momoko sees it gliding away, she orders everyone to chase and catch it. During the chase, they spot the X on a football being used by the football club. While Makio and Takeda try to catch the ball, Ikamasa decides to strike it using his head, causing the X to fly away once more, now leaving the school grounds. As the swimming club prepares to give chase, Mirei asks if she can at least get her jacket, since she (like most of them) is still dressed in her swimsuit. Fearing what Momoko will do if they lose sight of the X, the others decide against it. Of course, as Mirei feared, they get many stares, especially Mirei, as they chase the X into town. The next place the X lands is the head of Maaya, who has skipped training and is enjoying a drink on a terrace. She is delighted when Kaname shows up, but seeing the others behind him, she realizes something is wrong. When Kaname explains they are chasing one of Amuro’s X’s and that it landed on her head, Maaya gets jealous and angrily throws it away. As she runs away crying, the others watch the X disappear from view.

Back at the pool they get scolded by Momoko, who also kicks Ikamasa into the fence when he brags about his football skills. Makio asks Amuro if she is feeling weak because of the missing X and Amuro mutters something about her grandmother’s curse, that she would be cursed if she lost one of the X’s. As they wonder what to do about it, Sanae suggests creating a replacement, but nothing they try seems to work. As Momoko tells the others to leave Amuro and hope she will get better, Kaname recalls what Masashi told him about Amuro and her grandmother. He suggests trying to find the missing X again, explaining it is very precious to Amuro. He manages to convince Ikamasa, who tells everyone to split up and go look for it on foot.

While Maaya, by now at home, is still angry over Amuro getting more attention than her, the others ask around if anyone has seen the missing X. During the search, though, Ikamasa scares off some female students, Makio angers a cat and Sanae and Mirei both get distracted, Sanae by a guy (she loses interest after seeing his face) and Mirei by an object in a shop (which she thinks she buys, but instead buys something else). Just when the whole club gathers after an unsuccessful search, Isao spots the X on a train. When chasing the train ends in disaster as well, Ikamasa takes everyone, Kaname carrying Amuro, to a huge Buddha statue to pray for getting the X back. When Momoko realizes this plan, she kicks Ikamasa and Takeda (who was praying as well, just not for the X) to the ground. Suddenly Takeda spots the X on the Buddha’s forehead. Makio suggest they form a human ladder by sitting on each other’s shoulders, but Makio, who is sitting on top, still cannot reach the X. Meanwhile, Amuro spots a plate with steam bun offerings. As the human ladder threatens to collapse, suddenly someone else climbs it and on top jumps to grab the X. It turns out to be Amuro, who regained her strength after eating some offerings. It turns out the cause of her problem was skipping lunch. On the way back home Kaname and Amuro walk down the beach and Amuro aks him if he remembers the place, to which he answers it is where they first met. Amuro replies that it was the second time, the first time was at Chura Umi. Later, during dinner, after Kaname told what happened to Masashi, Masashi replies the curse of the X is one of Amuro’s grandmother’s lies.

Points of Interest

  • Like episode 5, this episode only covers two manga chapters
  • The eyecatch consists of two short animations.
  • The eyecatch appears to be based on the first frames of chapter 38 (first animation) and 39 (second animation), volume 3 of the manga, despite the episode not covering those chapters' contents.
  • The scene of Mirei ending up in the shop and buying something is based on her short story in the bonus section of volume 3 of the manga.
  • The scene of Maaya posing in front of a mirror at home is based on her short story in the bonus section of volume 3 of the manga.
  • The scene of Amuro and Kaname walking down the beach is based on one of their short stories in the bonus section of volume 3 of the manga.

Manga & Anime Differences

  • Several parts are anime only, like the part of the team searching for the X in town and the train chase.
