Ryu ("Dragon") is a master of mahjong who becomes embroiled in gangland gambling and murders in eastern Japan. Selling over two million copies after it was serialized in Modern Mahjong magazine, Cry of the Dragon made creator Junichi Nojo one of the two most successful manga creators of the 1980s; the other, Katsuhiro Otomo, also had a manga turned into an anime that year-Akira. The anime adaptation was the first show to portray mahjong games onscreen, a task no doubt made less boring by the murder subplots.
