Crimson Shanghai

Crimson Shanghai is an anime episode of CANAAN that was released on 07/04/2009

Canaan pops a few balloons with rounds from her rifle before finishing her job with shooting some faceless guy as the narrator talks about her and some other girl (Alphard) being led off of a ship in handcuffs. There is word that Alphard has been arrested by the CIA and will be taken out of the country soon. Meanwhile, Minoru agonizes over his latest assignment, covering some sort of conference in Shanghai while his new photographer Maria starts to grate on him with her incredibly upbeat manner.

The main characters spend some time running around Shanghai and enjoying the festival taking place there. Some corporate execs talk about people with "Synesthesia," a superpower that somehow merges all of a person's five senses to the point where they can somehow achieve bullet time in reality (at least, that's what this editor is inferring, as they don't really elaborate on how it makes a person better). At one point, a guy's animal helmet gets knocked off, and for some reason he ends up going insane briefly before he dies. Maria takes some photographs while the children think it's just and act and go dancing around his body. Then Maria finds herself dragged away by Canaan as people start shooting at both of them.

They stop to pick up a doll from a stand, and Canaan ties Maria's thumbs together with the red string that symbolizes their friendship (wha?), so she can't move. Canaan moves up to the rooftops and uses her own synesthesia to locate and shoot each of the gunmen chasing her, while Minoru looks from afar and wonders why the hell everyone's so jovial when there's a gunfight going on near them. He thinks that maybe they do notice, but they are choosing not to pay attention for fear of getting dragged into it.

Elsewhere, Alphard is smiling and humming a tune to herself. One of the CIA guys talks about her being the leader of a terrorist group called the Snakes, and suddenly the truck is attacked by her friends.
