She'll be the crew's resident spaz.
She'll be the crew's resident spaz.

Ah-ha! So that’s who the young girl in the cover is. Edward’s an odd name for a girl but this show - - hell, this episode specifically - - is full of strange names. I really didn’t get what the joke was about her naming the evil AI “MPU” - - other than it just being a flight of her girlish fancy. Spike’s comment about her completing the trifecta of things he should never have on his crew was a brilliant button line (and great complement to that sight gag showing the smiley face they carved into the world.) I’m kind-of surprised that it’s taken nine whole episodes for COWBOY BEBOP to get its primary cast together. Most shows would have most everybody together in the pilot. I suppose they were just biding their time… because this girl’s definitely going to be good foil for everybody in the crew.

Continuing the movie referencing, I’d say that this episode was pretty much spot-on in the style of every pre-MATRIX cyberpunk movie. I’m talking about HACKERS, JOHNNY MNEMONIC, LAWNMOWER MAN, THE NET, and so on.

Back when the internet was such a wonder to the average citizen, they could buy it being represented in literal “cyberspace” interfaces that would’ve actually made any contemporary computer cough up blood. This might actually be the first time I can identify anything produced in the 90s as having a “retro-futurist” aesthetic, because it’s abundantly apparent that this is a cyberpunk space opera circa ‘96’s imagination. The treatment of the internet here’s pretty evident of that, as well as the blocky cell phones and even the style of the airplane cabin in the previous episode. I’ve been flying all my life, so take it from me… I haven’t seen a plane with one giant movie screen for everybody to share in at least  ten years.

But I digress…

This was a fun episode, all-in-all. You get a plucky addition to the cast, some epicly-scoped black comedy with MPU’s global graffiti and even some straight-up, BUCK ROGERS-style space combat with Spike and Jet’s assault on the satellite. I’m looking forward to seeing what “Ed” brings to the show.

Waiting so long to assemble the entire cast was one of the many selling points of Bebop to me.

I always figured the larger than life communicators were indicative of a Type II civilization. Since their "mobile phones" reached the entire solar system. (yeah, I'm that nerd)

And Edward is one of the few anime "keets" or child characters that was awesome from beginning to end.

Your Bebop reviews is making me wish I owned the entire series already. I usually catch it on Adult Swim. But that's not the same as owning it.

Ed is possibly my favorite character that supplies comic relief. She's so wacky and off the wall X D

Wow, there was a lot of typos in this one.
But yeah, whacky, whacky Ed. Oh, how we love you.

You think 9 episodes is a long time for a primary cast? Check out One Piece. (although its arguable whether OP is supposed to have a primary cast since they keep adding)

Ed is one of my favorite kooky characters. She wasn't kooky just to have that character, she was very useful to the crew.

@lurkero To be fair, the addition most recently added member of the crew in One Piece is foreshadowed back when there are only three or four of them on the Going Merry.

I have to be honest, I had no idea what Ed's gender was until it is flat-out stated later on, lol.  I'm guessing Tom had to look it up to figure out what pronoun to use.

One of my favorite episodes is up next.  Probably because "ELM" is prominently featured.  Also because after the digression into cyberpunk when we meet Ed, we get back to some noir storytelling with plenty of pathos.

I thought that Ed was a boy until it was specifically pointed out in the anime. I think that might have been by design, no?

Whatever the hell gender Ed is, she's awesome. A very unique character.

@lurkero:  One piece is a bad example for everything though...much like dragon ball Z any show that has 400 episodes has gone on way to long.

@zaldar:  One Piece is a very good show that is going STRONG after 400 episodes.

I disagree. One Piece is approaching 500 episodes and it feels like it is just getting started. It could have probably been condensed to 300 or so, but whatever, I just skip the filler.

Also, Detective Conan. I don't think I'll ever get enough of that.

I'm pretty sure it was.  Even her father seemed pretty confused about her gender. (Although, I have to admit, it's been about 10 years since I've watched it, so my memory could be off.)

You neglected to mention my favorite quote from the show towards the end of the episode coming from Spike in response to Ein, Ed and Faye's presence on the Bebop:

"Jett, did you know that there are three things that I particularly hate. Kids, animals and women with attitudes. So tell me Jett, why do we have all three of them neatly gathered in our ship?"

@QuintLyn:  well her father was a peice of work in his own way...I mean think about Ed's past....(don't want to give it away but her father is a piece of work) so he might not be the best example but yeah I thought she was a boy for a long time to.

@lurkero:   See you have listed two shows here I can't stand...add pokeman, dragon ball Z, bleach, and Naruto along with every moe show in existence and you have pretty much every show I think is ruining anime (though I do watch bleach I feel like I need to shower everytime afterward)

@zaldar: How is Dragonball ruining anime when its time has come and gone. Even though Kai is out there, Dragonball has made its impact. You can hate a show as much as you want, but to ruin anime, wouldn't it have to drive away viewers?

Maybe you mean ruining the face of anime, I guess.  These are children's shows, and I see a place for them. Kids have to Dragonball before they Cowboy Bebop.

You don't like Detective Conan??

Dragonball was part of the crazyness of shonen.  The anime we got over here used to be about deep philisophical themes..then it became naruto and dragonball.  No I don't like conan...its pretty stupid actually...and cowboy bebop is far from my favorite show either actually.
