Apparently a lot of space travelers trip.
Apparently a lot of space travelers trip.

I suppose this is the real difference between Americ an and Japanese TV standards. They were able to do an entire episode about the crew tripping on 'shrooms. The look on Spike’s hung-over face was priceless; though I'm s urprised they didn’t go all the way and show his pupils dilate. It’d fit considering how big anime eyes are already.

This whole thing reminds me of my friend who was a big anime fan in high school. He kind of went off the deep end in college and would call me periodically call me to tell me about how he was trying to grow shrooms in the woods even though "the weather wasn't right." Perhaps anime was the cause all along?!

By the way, isn't the COWBOY BEBOP movie called "Stairway to Heaven?" The frog tells Spike he's on the stairway to heaven during his trip. Foreshadowing, perhaps?

Ah... another of one my favorite episodes with the right mix of comedy and action (struck better than some other shows.) Actually once again, it reminded me of a Buster Keaton short or, to bring it back to this world, a LUPIN III toon. And Ed finally got a chance to give her solo! I suppose this means that the inevitable “dark secret” from her past is going to rear its head.

I expected that the one guy was going to be dragging a Gatling gun in that coffin. Hoo boy, was I wrong! The run-over gag was hilarious for playing on expectations. Considering how there have been so many movie nods throughout the series, I suppose they were intentionally trying to play on allusions to DJANGO.  Actually, there were a lot of gags in this - - and I was enjoying all of 'em. I love how this episode basically started as an office/roommate dispute.

"Who ate the food?!"

It was almost like asking who snagged the last piece of somebody's birthday cake in the common kitchen. Thus, the reveal of Faye being the guilty one was perfect. It totally fit her character and (played on gypsy stereotypes!) I suppose you could say  the food poisionng was her "just deserts "- - ho ho!

I remember the first time I saw Cowboy Bebop was at this video store while I was living in Colorado at the time and they were showing that  exact episode and thought "That was the most craziest episode I have ever seen in anime and there's no way I am ever going to buy that series". A few years later I watched it in Toonami and changed my opinion about the series and I now own the box collection of it. But to this day I still feel that that this episode alone is pretty twisted.

well the movie is called  Knockin' on Heaven's Door just like the Bob Dylan song. Therefore continuing the titles referencing songs.

However, they re-titled it for the US release to just "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" because they were concerned that Bob Dylan might sue them.

This is the best episode in the Cowboy Bebop series by far X D Its so funny and off the wall its hard not to enjoy it. Plus it throws Ed and Eine in the lime light which makes a pleasant change.

@Dream: Heh... I'm having funny visions of a Ferris Buller/Cowboy Bebop crossover.

@Atari1777: Huh... it's amazing how things seem less scandalous and more cool as you get older.

Mild spoilers but you keep bringing it up:  we later find out that Faye isn't actually a Gypsy; she was lying.  I mean, you saw last episode or two her flashback episode?  She doesn't even KNOW who she is, much less if she's a Gypsy.  She's an amnesiac.

Ultimately....in a later episode, they loosely imply that she is from Singapore.

I forgot to mention at the time I saw that episode I was still a teenager at the time and it wasn't so much as being scandalous but more to the fact that I have never seen anything that trippy in an anime before. I have been mostly used to the quirky comical humor and action styles of Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Tenchi Muyo. The more sensible stuff that didn't have to make you think so much on what was the meaning behind the episode. My young immature little mind just couldn't  rap my head around as to what exactly was the whole point of the story. That's why when I was able to watch to the whole series on Toonami I was finally able to get the concept but still not so much the underlining meaning of it all. It wasn't until I started to read these posts that were written by you that many of the references that were being made in the show were an homage to many of the Sci-Fi concepts in american pop culture today. So thank you for making this website as enjoyable as it is and helping others like me to understand the depth that was put into the writing by the creators that worked so diligently to entertain us all, and your correct that things do get much more cooler when you get older. :)

hmm maybe the fact this is like lupin the third was what about this show annoyed me...as I pretty much despised that show.  I remember thinking this episode was funny but wanting more plot and character development.  Thankfully the next few episodes which do focus on ed do that very well.
