Sunrise has officially announced that there officially are plans for an official live-action Cowboy Bebop (officially!), and Keanu Reeves is officially slated to star. It's going to be produced by 20 Century Fox and Sunrise itself, along with 3 Arts Entertainment, and it will be produced by Erwin Stoff (a wide variety of Keanu's past films, including A Scanner Darkly, The Lake House, Constantine...) and exec-produced by Joshua Long (only credit I can find is for 2010's Blowing My Cover: My Life as a CIA Spy).
According to IMDb, the project is currently being scripted, but no scriptwriter has been named. (Original writer Keiko Nobumoto is among the Sunrise staff who'll work on it, as an associate producer...hopefully that means good things for the script.)
So, should we be concerned for a major mucking-up like many expect out of Dragon Ball Evolution? Hard to say. Here's what Stoff offers:
“I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth. When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A Scanner Darkly, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”
Okay, okay, guys, it's time we all speculate on the most important information after who's-playing-Spike and who's-writing-it: who is playing Faye Valentine? Who do you WANT to play Faye? And everyone else?
