Hibiki Kanzaki, an entertainment reporter for SNN, the Scramble News Network, catches two military officers, Sylvie Gena and Exxegran meeting at a hotel. His broadcast of the story nets high ratings, but gets him in trouble, and he is forced to apologize to Gena and Exxegran. Before he has a chance to deliver his apology to Sylvie in the Culture Park, which has as it's Centerpiece, the SDF Macross, the Macross releases a massive beam of energy.
Shortly afterwards, an alien space fleet approaches, made up partially of Zentradi and Meltradi ships, and Hibiki is assigned to cover the story with Denis Lone, a veteran reporter. They get to the battle and film the use of the "Minmay Defense", an attempt to force the enemy forces into a state of culture shock based on holographic video of Minmei Lynn performing. The attempt doesn't work.
As the battle continues, Hibiki pilots their craft inside a damaged enemy vessel, where they rescue a beautiful girl before the ship is destroyed, though in the process Lone dies. Lone's last words are for Hibiki to get the story out.
