Gia explains the world's largest comics con: Tokyo's semiannual Comic Market.

Betcha couldn't do somethin' like this in the West, or you'd have franchise owners crying copyright infringement.  Gimme some smutty, The Princess and the Frog, and maybe then I'll be interested in that movie...  Actually, no, I'd be too busy with Gurren Lagann smut.

@Arjuna: Yeah...in Japan the system has really built up that people who create doujinshi are the pool of talent that manga publishers may pull from, which means that a lot of manga and anime creators have a history in doujinshi. As such, publishers tend to look the other way at the vast majority of doujinshi. The rare exception I know of to this case is when Kodansha sued a guy who did a doujinshi that was the "ending" to Doraemon, basically because they thought that particular doujinshi would impact their sales.

The ending was ADORABLE.

Also, yes, this was very informative. The official, artistic (or not) usage of another's IP for financial gain just boggles my mind.

This was educational. I find it interesting how doujinshi are treated in Japan versus the legal reaction someone could expect for selling a comic book where Batman and Superman get it on, although I expect any large-scale action against Comiket and similar events or the people who make the doujins would result in some serious backlash from the otaku community.

Wait.. so Japan doesn't have the can't sale fan work based on other existing manga because of copyright rule?
Post by gia (3,032 posts) See mini bio Level 13
@sora_thekey: Oh, they do. They don't even have a "parody" fair use exception like the US has-- unbeknownst to many here. The difference is that the copyright owners there generally turn a blind eye to it :)

I've always wanted to read doujinshi that wasn't porn. You could say in some ways the U.S. has a form of fan works, maybe not in comic books but certainly in regular books. There are million plus Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice spin offs, sequels, parodies, etc. Then there's writers who take characters from well known stories and develop them in a different way like Wicked or Lady Macbeth. Then again, the authors for these works have been long dead, and the copyright thing isn't an issue anymore.

I'm suddenly reminded on a Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei episode where he confused the meaning of doujinshi...

It's cool to see that in Japan companies aren't as strict with people using their characters as in America.

@Lan: Not to mention fanfiction in and of itself ;) There is a lot of non-porn doujinshi. It's hard to find doujinshi that is both non-pornographic AND original in the US-- it's not frequently imported or scanlated the way the parodies and smut are --but they're out there. It's not uncommon for a doujinshi to contain a text portion that's basically just printed fanfiction, also. Very occasionally a doujinshi is more text than drawing.

@InfiniteGeass: I know. You know some authors, like Anne Rice, actually sue over people using their characters in fanfiction? She claims it disturbs her writing process or something like that. I know ff.net has a list of authors who request that people don't write fanfiction about their works. Authors' opinions really vary on the subject.

@gia: Is it possible to find doujinshi in the U.S. at all, besides maybe outside a con or the internet?

OMG! I just watched that whole video and didnt notice that they used the photoshoped pic i made as the background. I read the little thanks at the end and was like wait why is my name on there? Then i scrubbed back and was like HAAAAAAYYYY! I guess thats a testament to how intersting the video was gia, keep up the great work.

Surprisingly i knew a lot about what the video covered from an anime i remembered watching a few years ago, but i cant recall the name of it. It followed three girls who were making their own Doujinshi but the anime was styled in an over the top comedy setting where the Tokyo Big site turns into a giant mec and the girls battle it, or something. To be honest a lot of the plot was kind of a blur but it was a short series with only a handful of episodes but it covered pretty much everything this video did in a self parody style.

God bless Japan for doujinshi, though I wish for more original stories than ecchi versions of  a series.  Very instructive videos indeed (that includes the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei posted below).

Going to Comiket would be great! Even if the number of people there is insane.
