Ha! So this is a romantic comedy, now! Lelouch and C.C. might not be quite like Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn but lord help me if their little repartee isn’t just steaming with charming romantic tension. Of course, as far as “meet cutes” go, you can’t get much more memorable than the girl emerging from a pod and granting the boy nigh-omnipotent powers of suggestion. And what cruel irony… will he ever be able to use that power to make her love him?
And Suzaku gets his own love interest, as if only to further the parallels that exist between him and Lelouch. I find it kind of amusing how the Britannians are basically like, “Oh, alright… whatever,” when he gets brought back in and just drop all those pesky murder and treason charges like they weren’t really a big deal. I suppose he’s going to be cruising on easy street now that he’s got the princess as his girlfriend. Come to think of, he probably could’ve gotten away with actually killing Clovis if she told the official heavies to lay off.
The attempt at realpolitik in this is alternately intriguing and amusing. I don’t think I’m ever going to stop being amused by how this has demonized the Brits in a way that makes THE PATRIOT look complimentary by comparison. I guess the best analog would be to some futuristic show about America getting conquered by the power mechs of some absurd straw man threat like, oh, say, the Grand Proletarian Federation of Canada. Perhaps this is payback for any number of “yellow peril” storylines that might’ve run in British comics during the 40s.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great show so far. I just think it would’ve been better served by a setting that was cut from whole cloth like ESCAFLOWNE instead of this at-times awkward middle ground between fantasy and reality. I suspect this will be the chibi and spurious fuhrer-usage in FMA - - something I’ll get used to, if never accepting of.
