I’m glad to see the similarities Lelouch holds with Light extend into infeasible bouts of deductive reasoning, too. I’m sure he’s a smart one, but I don’t know if even a genius would even make the logical leap in realizing that people have to physically see his eyes for his “word of God” power to work on them. I’m sure he would’ve figured it on his own eventually, but it would’ve taken, you know, several bouts of experience, not just one.
Lelouch appears to be getting his own L in this episode with Suzaku san. I’m excited that the show’s already thrown this kind of curveball into the plot by introducing a counterpoint to the protagonist who’s actually a valiant man in spite of his allegiance to the enemy. Maybe even less so than a repeat of the cerebral cat and mouse of DEATH NOTE, I’m hoping for something capturingthe moral ambiguity you see in epics like THE ILLIAD. Not only is there room to root for Hector or Achilles in the fray, you also can’t dismiss either as the “villain” of the piece because they’re both heroes in their own right. To pile another comparison on, it’s like the hero vs. hero dynamic you got in the Hogan/Warrior match at WRESTLEMANIA XI.
You know that the pacing is great in a series when you get excited watching circles move on a battlefield map. I was really enthralled by the brutal dance of ambushes and counter-offensives between the Japanese and the British that ensues after each new mecha’s introduced. The designs of these armors might be fairly plain by comparison, but it’s an interesting gimmick to give them what amount to high-powered roller skates. The “bot battling” might not get as frenetic as EVA’s, but it’s certainly as fact paced and certainly a bit more tactical.
Alright, I’m sure this is going to be dealt with as the series unfolds… but is Lelouch supposed to be British? At first, I thought he was a Japanese noble who was being treated better by the Brittanians (or whatever they're called,) but this episode seems to suggest his Brittanian himself and possibly just a sympathaizer?
