Thirty years after the outbreak of war, the technologically advanced Republic of Legrante invades the Principality of Rubel, intending to use it as a staging post for the invasion of other countries. However, the prestigious boarding school Cluster E.A. is allowed to continue to operate within conquered Rubel territory-a place where once stood a clone factory designed to make soldiers. Agate Fluorite arrives at the school, where he is a breath of fresh air for jaded old hands like Beryl and Fon, who are bored by the perpetual pressure to live up to their parents' expectations. Like other children of privilege in Crest of the Stars, the students realize that they are part of a plot by their elders, and that peaceful student life will soon be disrupted by more belligerent, adult concerns. Anime for girls, set in a boys' school, or at least so it is claimed-although the show seems superficially aimed at a female audience, its action often bears a greater resemblance to boy-oriented Sunrise shows. A manga by Wan Komatsuda preceded the show in Lala DX magazine, but considering that the origin is credited to Bandai's house pseudonym Hajime Yadate (now there's your clone factory), we assume that the anime was conceived first, and was not based on the manga.
