That's not a sisterly peck on the cheek, either.
That's not a sisterly peck on the cheek, either.

One thing I especially like about CLAYMORE? It cuts through the BS.

Maybe it’s fitting that I’ve watched this episode just after posting my “final thoughts” on FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD and its odd aversion to cooties. It’s also an interesting counterpoint to Shinji and Misato’s relationship in EVA; an example of nearly-inappropriate, aged-gapped sexual tension actually getting fulfilled. They never come out and say what Clare and Raki’s ages are, but I suppose it could be a senior/freshman deal. Either way, if we’re talking about suspensions of disbelief, it’s easier to accept little girls who transform into giant tentacle monsters than it is to believe that a guy’s saying “I want to be with you all the time!” to a girl close enough to his age with only platonic motives.

On simpler terms, it’s probably about time Raki got some action.

I actually appreciate that he does so under such awkward circumstances. One of the many baffling magic tricks this series pulls is off is making the annoying teen sidekick work by, perhaps, just fessing up to how gawky he would actually be. There’s something actually more inspiring about him making a stand against the bad girls here when he’s demonstrating a woeful grasp of trash talk. Ditto for his heart-to-heart with Clare at the end having dialogue that just lets out how desperate and needy the kid actually is. We get conditioned to expect all these conversations to be so cool that it actually does feel sharper when characters are saying things that’d make friends roll their eyes at a dinner party.

Anyway, I’ll give this show kudos for having some genuine unpredictability. I figured Ophelia was dead, for sure. I couldn’t guess how Clare was going to walk away from getting maimed. I didn’t even suspect that we were going to so quickly encounter the big bad Claymores introduced last episode - - even though I should’ve smelled a set-up in what Clare was walking into.

One thing I do some coming - - Raki's going to become a Claymore, ain't he? Maybe he'll even be one of those super sex-charged Awakened Beings, too?

Watch this episode “The Endless Gravestones Part 1” below, decide for yourself and then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Raki wont be a Claymore since they stop bringing in males.

I was pretty surprised by the kiss when I first saw this, too, way back when it was coming out in Japan. And I've never been one to worry or care about age differences with that stuff so the thought never occurred.

Wrong, wrong, wrong! However...he does change. But you won't see any of it because the anime stops right before that point.

No Tom, Raki is not going to become a Claymore

Raki is still a punk. It's one thing to follow around someone, but when you know the kinds of missions they go on and you have no way to compare your skills, you're getting in the way. I'm glad Raki decided to improve his skills, but unfortunately the anime ends before its revealed and I have no interest in the manga.

I finished the series I heard that they dont follow  the manga which is sad, I havent read the manga but I hope that they bring back a second season. I sat through about 6 episodes of battle alot of it pretty repetitive and boring then it finally ends and Im all ready to watch the next episode and I find out that that is it. Bah

I generally don't like collecting manga. Action depicted by pictures is not interesting to me and I would rather see it animated. I tried to enjoy action focused manga before and it didn't work out.

It's not that I dislike the manga and like the anime if that's what you were thinking. I just don't enjoy reading action.

@Lurkero:
I understand your feelings. Some titles are just more entertaining when animated. The action doesn't have the same flow when you have to read it. But I enjoy a number of action-based manga yet have some that are story-based that I enjoy more. There could easily be more Claymore anime though.

Ah Ophelia... One of my favourite characters from the series.

I don't quite know what it is, but she's just so affably evil it's hard to not like her for some reason!

My thoughts when Ophelia "died"
"Wow, that was quick. wait, it was too easy."

The one thing I've learned when it comes to death in anime, specifically shonen, is
*in show* "Oh no, _______ died!!"
     *me* "Show me the corpse"
If a character just disappears, collapses (with or without a pool of their own blood), or goes missing, I'll doubt their death until the end of the series.  Show me them getting beheaded/dismembered, a fade to white, flashback of childhood or with whatever company they're with, etc. and I'll believe them dead.
