If any of you lunatics have ever been to Comic Con, you’ll know that it’s basically like a giant marble boulder dropping into the pond of your life. You’re fighting to swim through its ripples before and after it hits. I hope you all enjoyed the video content I set up before I left. Geo and I have actually got some video coming at you from the convention floor. Just be patient and enjoy these renewed Watch and Learns in the meantime.
Anyway, these Claymores are all just big softies. They want to seem so hard and tough, but their hearts melt faster than sugar cubes on a skillet. I was getting some sick amusement out of the abuse Teresa was flinging on lil’ Claire. Annoying kids show up all the time in action adventures, but how often does the heroine get to treat that kid the way everybody the audience really wants to? Of course, the whole “sympathetic character” nonsense means it can only go on for so long, so eventually she had to be take the little squirt on as a sidekick, but it was some sick fun while it lasted.
We get some interesting clues about the Claymores’ true nature, here (how gnarled did Teresa’s boobs have to be to get that kind of reaction?) but I think it’s Teresa’s attitude that’s more revealing. Earlier on, I speculated that Claire might be so weary from the repetition of her grim duties that she was looking for any way - - not matter how slight - - to make it more entertaining for herself. Considering how her mentor’s “faint smile” is such a remarkable part of her M.O., my theory about the Claymore’s ambivalence feels that much more spot-on, now.
I feel like the old trick of neatly slicing a bad guy in half from crown to groin has to be the signature move of the charmingly-shlocky OAVs of the 90s. So the fact that Teresa uses it so often here - - and so well - - reinforces how much this feels like late nite “not your daddy’s cartoons” done right. I’ve already said enough about that, though.
