Hellloooo Vicers! Good to see your smiling and happy Friday faces again for this titillating Dunce Cap episode. Well, not really because that would be weird, but you get the point. I'm here today to provide y'all with my thoughts on one of my favorite anime. This is a recent purchase from Best Buy that I paid less than $7 for because of coupons and gift cards I saved. Anyway, I'll get on with the show by presenting to you, Bandai Entertainment's Anime Legends DVD release of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (season 1/R1)!! All hail the United States of Japan!

Super Duper Mini Review

 Kimihiro Watanuki and Yuko.
 Kimihiro Watanuki and Yuko.

xxxHolic is an anime adaption of the on-going manga, created by CLAMP.  Both seasons were directed by Tsutomu Mizushima and produced by Production I.G.

Genres: comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery, psychological, slice of life, supernatural
Themes: ghosts, occult, spirits

Plot Summary via ANN

Kimihiro Watanuki is a young boy with a cursed gift. He has the ability to see evil spirits, and somehow they seem attracted to himself. One day he meets a misterious woman who names herself Yuuko. She claims to have the means to end his torment, but she never works for free, and she wouldn't help him until he works for her enough to pay for her services. Thus he starts to work in her shop and discovers that in that place, nothing is what it seems.

Pros and Cons (Covers both seasons.)

Pros:
  • A fantastic cast.
  • An entertaining world.  All the spiritual/mystery/supernatural stuff make the world great.
  • Surprisingly, the show is funny for a show that can be dark at times.
  • The the spiritual/mystery/supernatural stuff is great.
  • A very unique art style.  Fits with the show well.

Cons:
  • All the comedy is great, but it goes for some gags a little too often.

Who is it for?

If you are a fan of mystery/supernatural/psychological type shows with some comedy thrown in, definitely check out this show.  Also, if you are a fan of CLAMP's work, it say it's worth checking to see their other work.

If you live in the US and want to check it out, the first season is available on Hulu in subs.     (Might be available in other regions.)

 Yuko, such a strange woman.

What's a Super Duper Mini Review? Well, since I'm taking a break from written reviews, I decided to put a short list of what I liked and didn't like about the shows I watch.  For some info about the show like genre, plot summary, etc., I borrow (mainly copy and paste  :P) some info from Anime News Network, Wikipedia or the Anime Vice wiki.

Well, since I'm taking a break from written reviews, I decided to put a short list of what I liked and didn't like about the shows I review and put down some notes and fun facts as well. Super Duper Mini Review

 Kobato.
 Kobato.
Kobato. is an anime based on the ongoing manga of the same name, created by CLAMP.  There are 24 episodes produced by Madhouse and directed by Mitsuyuki Masuhara.  The show originally aired in late 2009 and finished in early 2010.

Genres: comedy, fantasy, romance, slice of life

Plot Summary

Kobato is a girl who came to earth to fulfill her wish, which is to go to a certain place. To fulfill that wish, she has to find a bottle and fill it wich scarred hearts. Together with her "teacher", which is a stuffed animal, she search for the scarred hearts. However she may not fall in love with any person whom she cures the heart of.

Pros:
  • A charming cast of characters from the super cute Kobato to the long wolf type Fujimoto, it was a great cast.
  • Very colorful and vibrant world in Kobato.  From the characters to the settings, it's great.
  • A very cute and charming tone to the show that makes it light hearted and fun to watch.
  • An enjoyable happy ending.  Not sure if it's in the manga or not, but I liked it.
  • I guess this is a CLAMP thing, but it was neat to see other characters from other CLAMP works.

Cons:
  • Gets a little to dramatic with simple matters at times.

For people that are looking for a fun and charming comedy/slice of life show and don't mind the show being very cutesy often, I highly recommend this show.  While there is some romance, it really doesn't happen till the last few episodes so if you want to watch this for the romance, just be aware of it if you decide to dive in.

I'm a big CLAMP fan; I've loved the group ever since Card Captor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth--two of my major gateway animes. They're like THE manga/anime super group. I really got interested in reading more of their work after seeing all the different characters in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I've decided this summer I'm going to attempt sample at least the first volume of every CLAMP manga--and there's a TON! Several are out of print, so I may have to rely on the net. I have been having good luck with used bookstores. I know there are some are very short series and others are one shots. I've found the first two volumes of both Legal Drug and CLAMP School Detectives. I've been able to find lots of copies for sale on half.com. My main goal is to broaden my knowledge of CLAMP's work, and check out the less mainstream stuff they've done that wasn't made into an anime. So far I've read: Legal Drug vol 1; CLOVER - complete series; Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles sporadic volumes, but I religiously and consistently read the volumes spanning from Acid Tokyo to the End, --shamefully that's all I've READ. I have all the MKR manga and watched the series, but have never sat down to read them. I've got to start reading XXXHolic, I know. Again watched the series and loved it. It's still going which will be interesting since Tsubasa (the manga it crosses over with) is finished.  CLAMP lovers, where should I start? What are your favorite series? What's the prettiest series? Which has the best story?

Note: I am not just shamefully making this sporadic blog post as a way of fulfilling a quest. ;)
