After his parents left Japan, Makoto is moving out of the big city of Tokyo to a less-crowded town where he plans to stay with his aunt, go to school and continue enjoying his "adolescence." Upon arriving at his new home, he settles in pretty well, minus the bike that barely works. And the aunt who seems just a little bit crazy to him.
Soon enough, while sitting down to dinner with his aunt Meme, he notices a rolled-up futon with legs sitting at the head of the table. When he asks Meme about it, she denies the existence of the futon-person despite sitting right next to it. To prove it, he accidentally knocks her over, which prompts the futon-person to start crying.
Meme later decides to mention that the person in the futon is her daughter Erio, whom she didn't bother to mention until now. Erio has an odd manner of speaking and seems to think that she's an alien. Her closest contact with the outside world in this episode involves ordering a pizza, then somehow magically eating half of it without getting outside the futon, all the while insisting that she's an alien sent to observe humanity.
That night, Makoto is coerced into taking her to a late-night store on his crappy bike. Upon reaching the parking lot, he finally yanks open the futon to see the face of a girl with long, bluish hair.
