Hotly pursued by a group of angry arms smugglers, private investigators Ranma and Layla have what first appears to be a fatal car accident. But when Ranma wakes up, he appears unharmed, although his beautiful female partner is nowhere to be seen. He soon discovers that they are now obliged to share a body, and that Ranma transforms into Layla at the stroke of midnight, in a blatantly unoriginal attempt by Monkey Punch to impart the capers of his Lupin III with the body-swap transformation of Ranma 1/2-Ranma is not all that common a name in Japan, making the comic creator's decision to name his leading man after Rumiko Takahashi's famous girl/boy all the more puzzling. The rest of this obscure TV series seems similarly half-hearted: the animation is often clumsy, the action dull, and the music a feeble attempt to revisit some of the jazzy cool of Cowboy Bebop. Almost everything that is wrong about anime in the early 21st century, wrapped up in one forgettable package.
