One of the main characters of Lunar Legend Tsukihime.
Ciel was born in a remote village in France in 1976 under the name of Elesia. Born to a French father and Oriental mother, she felt out of place due to her mixed heritage, yet still lived her life happily as she was loved by the townspeople. Ciel lived her life normally where she went to school, experienced love and helped her father at his bakery, as a girl her age would do. Seeing her as a rival in making naan bread, Ciel's father had forbid her from eating curry bread.
Ciel's life would begin to change for the worst when she turned sixteen. Unaware to her, her body had a high magical potential that led the Dead Apostle, Roa, to choose her as his 17th reincarnation. Roa's presence began to be felt on her at sixteen years old when Ciel began to experience violent and nefarious thoughts. The girl tried to completely isolate herself from the world and suppress these feelings, but Roa eventually took control over her body. While in Ciel's body, Roa would slaughter the populace of her hometown throughout an entire month until Arcueid revived and slayed Elesia's body to kill Roa.
With her body taken by the Church, they were surprised to discover that Ciel had revived with her personality intact and her fatal wounds healed. As a result of her connection to Roa, Ciel was now immortal and could never die for so long as Roa exists. The Church would send her body to the Vatican where she was killed repeatedly over an entire month for both experimentation and to try killing her since she was deemed a heretic. Being incapable of killing her, the Vatican instead entered her into the Burial Agency, a group of powerful Church executors sent to kill demons. Ciel's goal is to completely eliminate Roa's existence from the world to restore her mortality.
Ciel is originally created by Type-Moon for the Tsukihime visual novel game. For the anime, she is voiced by Fumiko Orikasa in the Japanese version and Wendee Lee in the English version. She is voiced by Kumi Sakuma in Melty Blood.
Ciel stands at roughly 65 inches (165 cm) tall with her three sizes being 85 cm for bust, 56 cm for waist and 88 cm for hips. Because of her mixed blood, Ciel has bluish-black hair and blue eyes. While appearing as a teenager physically, Ciel is actually in her 20s chronologically as she hasn't aged in ten years thanks to her immortality. Under her guise as a student, Ciel normally wears her school uniform and is wearing a pair of glasses, though she doesn't require them to see clearly. As a Burial Agency member, she wears the robes of a Church Executor. Underneath the robes, she wears a blue outfit with no sleeves and a short skirt. The latter outfit is due to Ciel having a costume fetish where she designed the outfit for her use while "on duty".
Ciel has differing personality traits she demonstrates depending on her role. As a student, she is a kind and trusting upperclassman willing to help others in need. As a Burial Agency member, she is cold and serious in her duties as an Executor. She retains her kind personality as a student to investigate whether Shiki Tohno is Roa's current reincarnation and makes friends with a number of students at the school as a result of it. While preferring to retain her cold persona to focus on her goal of hunting down Roa, this becomes increasingly difficult for her to do when being around Shiki, as she develops feelings for the boy.
A well known element of Ciel's character is her obsessive love for curry. She is known to stockpile many bags of the food within her apartment. Despite being told by her father not to indulge in the food, Ciel developed her love for curry during an encounter in India with the Dead Apostle, Curry de Marche, as she was shocked her father had been keeping it away from her.
Note: The storyline covered here is from developments in Ciel's route from the Tsukihime visual novel game.
When Ciel and Shiki work together in killing Roa's latest reincarnation Shiki TOHNO, Roa manages to transfer his soul into Shiki before his demise. This results in Shiki losing control over himself as he develops murderous thoughts and strange dreams, one of which where he witnesses the bloody slaughter inflicted by Roa while he possessed Ciel's body. After brutally attacking and raping Kohaku from his lack of control, Shiki flees from the Tohno mansion and seeks out Ciel's help, afraid to be in contact with other people out of fear for what he would do to them.
The two meet on the roof of the school where Ciel is armed with the Seventh Holy Scripture. She then tries to kill Shiki, believing that death was the only means Shiki had to free himself from Roa's madness. However the love she developed for the boy leads her to lack the desire to kill him after immobilizing the boy, as she collapsed in the boy's arms and cried. The two then go to Ciel's apartment where Shiki's body becomes excited from Roa transferring into his body. Realizing this, Ciel devises a means to calm Shiki's soul through intercourse. However, this only strengthens Roa's control over Shiki, as the boy flees from Ciel's apartment and encounters Arcueid. Having come to kill Shiki with Roa possessing his body, Arcueid blames Ciel for his current condition and offers to help him if he obeys her. Arcueid's actions will depend on what choice you make for the situation in the game.
If you agree to Arcueid's conditions, this triggers Ciel's "Good Ending". Arcueid will proceed to kiss Shiki and tempt him to bite her neck and drink his blood. Ciel stops this from happening and the two argue over what the best means would be to rid Shiki's body of Roa. As the two argue, Roa gains control over Shiki's body and the boy tries killing himself by slashing his chest with a knife to stop Roa. The boy then has a vision of Roa's past before he became a Dead Apostle and Roa finally vanishes for good. With Roa defeated, Ciel and Arcueid decide to "share" Shiki, triggering a sort of harem ending.
If you refuse Arcueid's conditions, this triggers Ciel's "True Ending". Arcueid will become angered by Shiki's refusal and this leads Shiki to slash the line of death in her neck using his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. The attack drives Arcueid into a murderous rage as Ciel arrives in the nick of time to flee with Shiki to the school. Ciel tries to fend off Arcueid when the True Ancestor arrives, yet is easily defeated. When Roa's control of Shiki's body intensifies, he attempts to kill himself by slashing his throat to calm Arcueid and kill off Roa. This action leads Arcueid to return to her normal state and vanishes as she bids farewell to Shiki. Shiki managed to survive his attempted suicide as Ciel takes him back to his house to treat his wounds and the two become a couple.
Regardless of the ending though, Shiki's efforts lead to the end of Roa's reincarnations and restore Ciel's mortality.
Ciel's body possesses plenty of potential, both physically and magically. Physically, her attributes are superhuman as she can match the feats of vampires and low-ranking Dead Apostles on her own. While her attributes are not a match for more powerful Dead Apostles, her arsenal of weapons as an Executor still make her a major threat to many of the vampires. Her physical capabilities are great enough where she is also capable of fighting Servants, though she can only engage them in defensive combat.
Ciel is proficient in the use of a diverse number of weapons from swords to guns, the latter she has a greater preference for use in battle. She is shown to utilize two different weapons throughout Tsukihime: Black Keys and the Seventh Holy Scripture.
Black Keys are charms used by the Church to inflict harm upon demons and manifest in the form of bladed weapons. While considered weak in attack power, they are still strong enough to pierce through concrete walls and can inflict harm upon spiritual phenomena. They have the ability to pin down the shadow of a target and immobilize them for so long as the shadow is restrained. Ciel is capable of using several Black Keys at a time in battle and has a large arsenal of them that she keeps stored within the pages of a Bible.
The Seventh Holy Scripture is one of the Church's strongest weapons in terms of magical and physical power. Forged together from the horn of a unicorn and the soul of a dead girl, the properties of the weapon's blade are powerful enough to inflict wounds upon Dead Apostle targets that are incapable of being immediately healed. With modifications made by Ciel, the Seventh Holy Scripture's shells are capable of vaporizing its target down to their very soul upon being fired, preventing even reincarnation from saving them. The weapon weighs 60 kg (about 132 lbs.), normally requiring a team of magi to carry it for efficient use in combat. But because of Ciel's superhuman strength, she is capable of wielding it with little hindrance while in battle.
Ciel's body possesses a large amount of mana that gives her plenty of potential with magecraft, having a greater mana supply than a natural-born magus like Rin Tohsaka. Due to her link to Roa, Ciel possesses a large amount of knowledge on various types of magic, which she could potentially make use of if she wanted. But due to a psychological block she made on herself, Ciel prefers not to make use of this knowledge in order to distance herself from her connection to Roa, thus limiting her potential with magic.
Despite this, Ciel is still able to make use of magic in differing forms while in combat and on her missions. She possesses the Mystic Eyes of Whisper, which allow her to manipulate and hypnotize whomever comes into eye contact with her. The Mystic Eyes were what allowed her entry into Shiki's school to manipulate the students and staff to allow her to do what she pleased on and off missions.
Ciel also has magical runes engraved on her Black Keys that can inflict various magical effects upon their target upon being pierced by the blades. The effects can range from burning, dehydration, petrification and being attacked by crows.
Ciel's immortality was brought about from a combination of both her connection to Roa and her magical potential. So long as her brain isn't destroyed, Ciel's magic circuits will continue to produce mana to heal her body from injury, thus giving her a passive ability to regenerate from most types of damage. This ability was witnessed by the spirit of the planet, Gaia, and triggered a contradiction for it as Roa's soul had passed on to its 18th reincarnation, Shiki TOHNO, after the six months it took for Ciel to revive herself. Since Ciel was perceived to be Roa and still alive despite Roa already being reincarnated, Gaia "corrected" the contradiction by making Ciel live eternally, since it believed Roa lived eternally as well due to his ability to reincarnate.
As a result of the "correction", Ciel is incapable of dying for so long as Roa exists in the world. She cannot age and any kind of damage inflicted on her is reversed by time back to the point from before it was made on her. Even pools of blood and shredded clothing coming from the damage are reverted back to their normal state on Ciel as a result of this time reversal effect. The effect doesn't work on foreign objects that impale her, thus she could still be trapped in place if such objects are restraining her. Plus while the ability is reliable in combat, it still can't help her against powerful foes like Arcueid, who can keep killing her to prevent her from retaliating against them. In addition, she can still be taken down permanently by anyone who can cut her origin of death with the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, like Shiki Tohno.
Because of her connection to Roa, Ciel is able to sense the whereabouts of his soul to determine the location of his new body. After Roa's death, Ciel is now capable of aging and can die like any normal human. However due to her body's ability to regenerate any damage inflicted on her, Ciel is still a formidable foe, even without her immortality.
