Plot

Japan has exceeded itself in its latest technological creation: persocoms. These are extremely life-like robots that look and feel like humans. A person can program them to do pretty much whatever he/she desires. Hideki Motosuwa is a struggling Japanese student living on his own. He dreams of having a persocom of his own to cook, clean, and basically take care of him. One day he finds a discarded persocom (that looks like a beautiful, blonde girl) in a pile of garbage. He manages to haul it home and turn it on.

Upon turning it on, he realizes the persocom is missing her programming software. She has no memories or skills. It seems she is only able to say the word, "Chii." Hence, Hideki decides to name her, "Chii." Chii immediately fixates on Hideki and regards him with love and adoration. The series focuses on the relationship between Chii and Hideki, and on the themes of love and technology. Can these life-like robots feel emotion? Are they capable of love? What does it mean for a human and persocom to be in a relationship together? Chii is also revealed to be more than meets the eye. Her mysterious background is steadily discovered throughout the series.
