Konaka, Chiaki. (1961–). Born in Tokyo, Konaka is a novelist and influential screenwriter in anime and live-action since the late 1980s. A film school graduate who joined the Eizo company as a director in 1986, he left to become a freelance writer the following year. He founded the production company Kyodai (“Brothers”) in 1992, with his director sibling Kazuya, for whom he has written several later Ultraman scripts (*DE). His most notable works in anime include Armitage III, the Bubblegum Crisis remake BGC Tokyo 2040, DevilmanLady, and Serial Experiments Lain. His works often acknowledge his interest in H.P. Lovecraft, Alice in Wonderland,and dolls, all of which come together in Malice Doll. Sometimes credited, for no good reason, as Chiaki J. Konaka.
