Caster is a servant from Fate/stay night. She became a Honored guest of the Ryudou Family and was able to stay at their temple unitl preparations for her marriage have been finalized. She was really using the temple to revive the Holy Grail.
While alive, Caster was known as Medea, the tragic princess of Colchis who would be condemned to being labeled as a witch in Greek mythology. She was in possession of the Golden Fleece and taught magic through her father, King Aeetes. Against her will, Medea was manipulated by Jason of the Argonauts to blindly fall in love with him and obtain the Golden Fleece using her magic, driving Medea to have to leave her kingdom. While Jason would become the King of Argo for obtaining the fleece with Medea as his wife, the Argonauts disapproved of the two ruling Argo and drove the two into exile.
The two would eventually settle into Corinth, until the kingdom's rule, Creon, took a liking to Jason and made him the wife of his daughter Creusa. Jason would take this offer and abandon Medea. In a rage, Medea would burn all of those who attended Jason and Creusa's wedding, yet spared the life of Jason. After this act, Medea would be labeled as a witch and her fate would be unknown after she left Corinth.
Caster was created as an antagonist for Type-Moon's Fate/Stay Night visual novel game. There is no information known about her character's design during development of the game. She has appeared in anime and manga adaptations of Fate/ Stay Night which include Studio Deen's 2006 TV anime, TV and movie adaptations of the Unlimited Blade Works route and Carnival Phantasm. For animated adaptations of Fate, Caster was voiced by Tanaka Atsuko in Japanese and Tara Platt in English.
Caster stands at 163 centimeters (about '5'4"), with her three sizes being 82 centimeters for bust, 57 centimeters for waist and 84 centimeters for hips. She has long purple hair and purple eyes. While in battle, Caster dons attire befitting a witch in fairy tales, sporting a purple-black cloak with purples robes that conceal her face. For casual clothes, Caster wore a long-sleeved black shirt, purple jacket and long buttoned-up brown skirt.
Originally, Medea possessed an innocent personality with a strong desire of wanting to be in love. However, the betrayal she faced throughout her life drove Medea to take on the mentality of the witch that people labeled as in order to drive them away from her and take revenge on those who had wronged her. She is a clever woman able to manipulate others and plot plans for her personal gain. In spite of taking on the role of a witch, she hates being called one as she will punish those who call her a witch twice. Her encounter with Kuzuki softens Caster enough to want to live a normal life with him and took up an interest in wanting to learn more cooking.
Caster's first Master was a member of the Mage's Association. But she killed him due to his cautiousness and hesitance to engage in combat. On the verge of her spiritual body dissipating, she stumbled upon Kuzuki Souichirou at the foot of the Ryuudou Temple. Caster begged this stranger for his help and Kuzuki obliged without hesitation, forming a new contract with her. He then brought Caster into the temple and tended to her recovery. Caster quickly fell in love with Kuzuki as he was the first man to show her genuine kindness, dedication and loyalty. Her primary objective shifted from obtaining the Holy Grail for herself to simply preserving their short time together. To achieve this end, she absorbed mana from the populace of Fuyuki City and fortified her position on Mount Enzou.
Caster was killed in every scenario of Fate/stay night. In the Fate route, she was torn apart by Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon while ambushing Shiro and Saber. In Unlimited Blade Works route, she stabbed Saber with Rule Breaker and negated Saber's contract with Shirou, leading Caster to torture her in the hopes of forcing her into obedience. While attempting to kill Shiro and Rin in the basement of the Kotomine Church, she dies protecting her Master from Archer's hailstorm of blades. Caster is killed early on in the Heaven's Feel route by Saber, but Zouken Matou uses one of his worm familiars to maintain her body as a puppet.
Born during the Age of Gods where magic was at its strongest, Caster's use of magic is at a level as such where most modern magi would be incapable of matching up to her abilities as she can easily fend off many spells cast by them. Her mana reserves are high as such where she would be capable of living up to two days without a Master and can utilize the skill of High-Speed Divine Words where she can quickly cast spells without having to connect to Magic Circuits or needing to incant verses. While lacking the capability of utilizing use of the five "true magics", Caster is still capable of utilizing spells that possess similar properties to them.
Because several of the Servants in the Grail War possess Magic Resistance, Caster tries to avoid direct combat where possible as she makes use of the Ryuudou Temple and Assassin to protect her from intruders, and will make use of manipulation and deception where possible to either defeat her foes or try persuading them to ally with her.
With her knowledge of magic, Caster is familiar with the workings of the Grail War. She tampered with the Class System to break the Grail War's rules by summoning her own Servant in the form of Assassin and knows of the Grail War's true nature as a ritual where only one magi would gain access to Akasha. Caster is aware that the Holy Grail is empowered by all seven Servants when slain and that it would be impossible for one to have their wish granted. She knows of an alternative means to create the Holy Grail without requiring any of the Servants being slain.
As a Caster-class Servant, Medea possesses high ranks in the Item Construction and Territory Creation skills due to the high skills and knowledge she possessed with magic during her time alive.
With Item Creation, Medea is able to create magical items and could easily manufacture a large number of them if she were able to. She can easily create healing potions that can grant limited immortality and turn people into magical tools to support her magic. Medea never utilized this ability for much of Fate as she was too occupied on strengthening the defenses of Ryuudou Temple. However in one Bad End of the Unlimited Blade Works route, she would turn Shiro's body into a wand that could cast Projection magic and would use it to successfully reach Akasha.
With Territory Creation, Medea is able to create a territory with her magic that would benefit her while in battle. Utilizing Ryuudou Temple, Medea combined the temple's barrier with a bounded field she created to weaken the effects of magic coming from intruding Masters who enter the temple grounds. The field's effects cease once one is able to enter inside the temple. As the temple also serves as the center of spiritual activity within Fuyuki, Medea can passively absorb the life force of the land and populace within the city in order to further strengthen her magic.
Caster possesses two Noble Phantasms for her use in the Grail War: Rule Breaker and Argon Coin. Rule Breaker is the only Noble Phantasm she would use throughout the Grail War. It is a jagged dagger that allows Caster to sever the contracts between Masters and Servants, allowing her to take control over a Servant through gaining the Command Spells used to control them.
Argon Coin would have allowed Caster to summon a dragon and this would have made her a mid-level threat in the fifth Holy Grail War. However, she lacks the knowledge to be able to utilize its abilities.
With her high level of knowledge and skill in magic, Caster has various ways in which she can utilize it. She is able to conceal her presence using her prana, regenerate herself from injuries and can use her cloak to float in the air. Caster can take control over the minds of humans and weak magi to have them follow her commands, the ability being potent as such where she took control over Shiro while he was at his home on the other side of Fuyuki. She can cast a very strong form of Reinforcement that allows one to have the ability to fight on the level of a Servant for as long as it remains cast. Caster can also summon Dragon Tooth Warriors, skeletal warriors that function as basic soldiers that fend against enemy Servants and Masters.
With High-Speed Divine Words, Caster is easily able to bombard foes with her primary attack called Rain of Light, a volley of rapidly fired beams with an A-rank level of attack. She is capable of casting this attack while flying in the air and can continue to constantly fire the attack off with little preparation at her targeted foes.
