Origin

Cancer's Gate Key.

Cancer's owner has been Lucy from the beginning of the series since him, Aquarius and Capricorn were all originally in the possession of her late mother, Layla. Like all other Celestial Spirits, Cancer can only be summoned in accordance with the contract Lucy has signed, and his contract says he can only be summoned on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Creation

As one of Mashima's characters, Cancer was designed to look like a funky hairdresser, albeit with some added quirky features to resemble his respective zodiac sign such as his red hair, the crab legs located on his back, and his scissors which represent his pincers.

Cancer in love with Erza?

Cancer has a unique speech pattern of ending all his sentences with the word ‘ebi' (shrimp). This is a play on the expectation of his nature as a crab, with Happy and others originally expecting Cancer to end his sentences with 'kani' (crab). His usage of -ebi is a consistent disappointment for characters around him when he is summoned. He also became infatuated with Erza as shown when he gave her a bouquet of flowers on Galuna Island and even ended his sentences with 'choki' (snip) whenever he was summoned in her presence since she was the one who recommended the alteration.

Powers & Abilities

Scissors

Cancer gives members of the Naked Mummy Guild a new look.

He uses a pair of scissors as his weapons, and exhibits the personality of a hair dresser. He is fast and agile in combat, as well as being adept at styling and cutting Lucy's hair. He combines these two aspects to create a unique fighting style, where he ends up usually defeating enemies by cutting off all their hair. It was also shown that his scissors are sharp enough to cut through weapons such as swords and hammers.
