Calimero, a little black chick with an eggshell for a hat, was created in 1963 by Nino and Tony Pagot for an Italian advertisement. Taken up by a Japanese production company, the original animation was expanded into a long series. The series was revived for TV Tokyo in 1992 under director Tsuneo Tominaga, with new scripts by Jiro Takayama and Mayori Sekijima. If anything, the availability of the new series on video made it an even bigger success in the children's market than its predecessor.
