The 2nd of the 4 Saint Beasts that Yusuke and the gang encountered in Maze Castle. Kuwabara had to defeat him twice in order to past him, but in the end, Byakko was killed by his teammate Seiryu.
Spirit Detective Arc: Saint Beast Chapter
After returning home from training by Genkai, Yusuke finds little time to enjoy his time back home as the people of his home city start attacking him, Kuwabara, and Keiko. Botan arrives and tells them that the attacks are caused by the 4 Saint Beasts, as they got hold the Mikai Whistle, which can summon and control insects that can take over people. They made an ultimatium to the higher up in Spirit World: Free them from Maze Castrle or they'll take control of all humans and cause chaos. Koenma then orders Yusuke and Kuwabara to go to Maze Castle and destroy the whistle. The two then encounter the reformed Hiei and Kurama, sent as back up to help the two humans make their way through the demon city to reach Maze Castle.
After defeating the rock-demon, Genbu, Kurama was gravely injured. Kuwabara vowed to take on the next Saint Beast they encountered, and soon enough: Byakko gave off a roar that shook the entire castle and caused a cave-in the corridor that the heroes were in. They manage to race to the ramparts of the castle, where they encountered Byakko, the White Tiger. Byakko made a clear bow to eat Yusuke and Kuwabara as his meals and just kill Hiei and Kurama to help resolved his pinned up rage of being a wild animal being locked up in the castle. He then challenges the heroes on the ramparts, to which he let loose another roar to break the castle more to make the open ground ramparts into deadly drop below.
Kuwabara being outnumbered by Byakko's beasts
Good to his word, Kuwabara took the chance to fight him, to which Byakko just laughs and says that he could kill Kuwabara
with just the hairs of his mane: To which Byakko plucks 4 hairs from his said mane, and then blew them into the wind... and they then turned into Beasts, monstrous animals that are an extension of Byakko, sharing his urges and desires.
Byakko orders his creations to attack Kuwabara, to rip him apart but leave his body for himself to eat. At first, Kuwabara just tries to avoid the beasts attack, finding whenever he takes a swing at one, they just recover. With little options to do, Kuwabara makes a retreat... but turns out he was setting up a trap: by moving to a narrower part of the ramparts, the beasts had no choice but follow Kuwabara in single file, where the human scourer the 4 beasts in one blow. With his beasts immobilized at that moment, Byakko then adds more power to his creations, making them charge at Kuwabra once a again. With his sword acting like a guide line to him, Kuwabara makes another retreat, only to see up another trap. By runing around the entrance he and the gang entered, as well as extending his sword, Kuwabara makes a complete ring with his sword and leave the beasts stuck. Kuwabara then laughs at the "monster beast doughnut" he created, which infrutates Byakko, as he could not stand having his prey laughing at him.
Byakko ready to go head to head with Kuwabara
After destroying his beasts (as well the gang's attempt to backtrack), Byakko jumps into the fight, ready to take Kuwabara personally. Impress with his size and strength, Kuwabara barely avoid any hits by Byakko while giving the white tiger plenty of slashes of his Spirit Sword, but shortly after the start of the battle: everyone then notices something is wrong: Byakko was gaining strength and size while Kuwabara was getting weaker. It was then Byakko reveals that with each blow that Kuwabara dealt him, he was absorbing in his spiritual energy and becoming stronger from it. Unable to take Byakko on with his bare hands, Kuwabra continue to use his spirit sword, this time aiming at Byakko's mouth, only to have the white tiger personally sucking in so much of Kuwabara's energy, that Kuwabara collapses in exhaustion. Pounding Kuwabara around to "tenderizing" him, Kuruma makes a note that Byakko seem to stop growing in size from the last absorption. Kuwabara also noticed that the energy in Byakko was slushing around "like he has barely room for it." This gives Kuwabara an idea.
Byakko about to explode
Charging whatever left of his spiritual energy in his sword, Kuwabara makes another strike at Byakko, aiming right at his gut until he passes out again. Feeling full from Kuwabara's energy, Byakko notes that he no longer has room to eath Kuwabra whole, so in stead, the savage white tiger demon was going to turn Kuwabara into pulp for later, but then his stomach start to expanding uncontrollably. Kuwabara awakens to note that his plan has work: Byakko as took in so much of Kuwabara's
energy in such a short time, the mighty and powerful Saint Beast explodes due to Spirtiual Build-Up.
With Byakko gone, Kuwabara regain his stolen energy, and the gang is ready to take on the next Saint Beast... only to hear the castle shattering roar of Byakko again...
Byakko in his Room of Hell
After somehow coming back to life after exploding and then appear back in the castle, Byakko demands that Yusuke and the rest come fight him in his training grounds, a giant room filled with lava with stone pillars as the only way to get across. Seeing how he still has to settle the score between the two of them, Kuwabara takes the chance to fight Byakko. The 3rd Saint Beast then shows off his special attack: The Tiger Scream, in which Byakko's roar is condense and can destroy anything at the molecular level. Kuwabara attempt to swing that attack back at Byakko like a baseball with his spirit sword, Kuruma points out that by doing so, would cause a chain reaction that would destroy Kuwabara's soul.
With no real long range attacks, Kuwbara has to move from pillar to pillar to get closer to Byakko while avoiding his Tiger Screams. Byakko then stops Kuwabara movements temporarily with his Tiger Claws in order to point out that he was purposely attacking the pillars, making sure that Kuwabara has to jump from the pillar that he is on to Byakko's with no route to escape or move around from. Kuwabara notes a small pillar that Byakko overlooked, but the White Tiger took that one out too.
Kuwabara's fianl move againist Byakko.
Again, with no other options, Kuwabara attempts to jump to Byakko's pillar, only to find out in mid jump that Byakko lied: Kuwabara could never made the jump between the two. With his prey falling to his doom, Byakko luaghs with pride... that is, until Kuwabara summons up his spirit sword, enlongating it, and use it as a pole vault on the broken pillar's remains,
launching himself high into the air, giving him enough power to punch Byakko off his pillar and into the lava pit, thereby ending the 3rd Saint Beast again...
2nd Return and Finale Death
Byakko after his lava bath
After Yusuke's team reach the lair of the 2nd Saint Beast: Seiryu, the Blue Dragon, Byakko, somehow surviving his fall into lava, crawled out, and still be minutes behind Yusuke's team after they journeyed a great deal into the castle after their last encounter, limps to his comrade in help defeating them. In response, Seiryu freezes Byakko on the spot and shatters him, leaving the TIger's head the only whole piece left, which was still alive.
Byakko's still living served head coughing up blood
In shock, Yusuke and Kuwabara gave their outage on how Seiryu could have done that to his fellow Saint Beast, to which Seiryu response was that Byakko was more like a cheap sword that lost it's edge rather than an ally. He spit on the still living Byakko's face right before the Saint Beast finally dies with a frozen tear in his eye.
Before he started his fight with Seiryu, Hiei showed some sign of compassion by covering Byakko's head with his cloak, and after killing Seiryu and retrieving his cloak, Byakko's dead head disappears in green light.
Byakko has super strength due to his size as well as being a tiger demon, making him significantly stronger than the normal human; in fact, a whip of his tail can break stone. He has longevity as he and and his fellow Saint Beasts were locked up in Maze Castle for hundreds of years well also to having great stamina from the others, as he was thought dead at least twice before being put down permanently. His basic roar also had the ability to cause maze castle to crumble as well as summon lightning.
Byakko sucking in Kuwabara's Spirit Energy in the ANime
Byakko sucking Kuwabara's spiritual energy in the manga
Energy Absorption: Byakko's most basic abilities. He can absorb the energy of others and can add to his own, increasing in size (in both height and weight). It appears he has no control over this ability, as any bodily contact with energy; Byakko absorbs it if he wants to or not. This proves to be his down fall in his first match against Kuwabara, as the human's abundant spiritual energy caused the mighty Saint Beast to "explode" from the over load.
Byakko breathing "life" into his hair.
Kuwabara being outnumbered by Byakko's beasts
Beast Creation/Control: Byakko can make beasts from the hair of
his mane and can control them. They are an extension of himself, meaning
that serve only him. He can also power them up significantly without
any coast to his own power.
Byakko's TIger Scream
Byakko's Tiger Scream
Tiger Scream: Byakko's roar in a condensed form. This attack can shatter objects at the molecular level. Byakko used this attack to limit Kuwabara's movements in their 2nd fight in the Room of Hell. Kurama theorized that if Byakko's TIger Scream made contact with Kuwabara's Spirit Sword, it would have cause a chain reaction that would level Kuwabara's spirit to be shattered.
Byakko's Tiger Claws
Byakko's Tiger Claws
Tiger Claws: No real officall name given to this attack as well as no real explanation of what it does or how it works. Byakko just creates "claws" between his own fingers with some sort of energy and hurls them at his enemies. He used this once against Kuwabara in their 2nd match.
Difference in Manga and Anime
One of the main changes between the manga and the anime adaptation is how Byakko is defeated in first fight with Kuwabara. In the manga, Byakko gets a hole in his stomach and flies around in like a balloon to which he crashes back into the castle and threatens the heroes to a rematch, to which he wears a bandage to cover the hole in his stomach
In the anime however, Byakko bascially explodes and falls from the castle ramparts, but somehow, with no explanation: Ended up back to normal back inside the castle: in his own training room none the less.
