@Acura_Max:

You and sickVisionz keep blowing me away with your analysis. I should step up my game.

I remember Mike20's profile image.

For Btooom!, I feel bad for the mother. I see guys throw away their lives for video games. They'll be working at fast food restaurants and then playing games at home. The anime makes reality look like crap, but living the game can be a double edged sword. The thrill is there at the cost of your life.

Ryouta was whiny, but he'll man up not like some wimpy ass characters I seen, cough Shu Ouma. If he's like Light, then I have high expectations for him.

While episode one followed the manga for the most part, episode two deviates greatly from the manga. Here are some quick thoughts:

Quick Thoughts

  • True, they did not change the plot of the story, but the order in which they revealed the back story and the events was a step in the wrong direction. In the manga, Let me elaborate. Episode one faithfully captured the first chapters of the manga. Episode two, however, skipped to chapter at least. In the manga, when we first see Himiko, the viewer notices that she has multiple bags of bombs. Since the way to get more bags is by killing other people, the natural question that pops into the viewer's mind is how a timid girl like Himiko could kill some many people. It creates mysterious arua around Himiko and it gives us incentive to want to find out what her story is about. By revealing her background now, the viewer isn't given proper time to ponder why Himiko was sent to the island, nor see her character develop.
  • I was wondering how they would portray the more mature scenes and to takashichea's relief (and mine), they are toned down alot. In fact, the violence has also been toned down too. By now we should have seen a severed hand.
  • Although Himiko blames herself, I thought she made a really smart decision to leave. I really don't think she could have done anything to help her friends. If she stayed it would most likely have gotten worse.

@takashichea: It's been awhile since I've seen the manga. After a viewing of this anime, Ryouta seems like a Light Yagami with a heart. He has the ability to form strategies quickly, but he is not as cold-hearted as Light.

I really don't care about this show much but I can't get over the fact that it's called BTOOOM!, that's such a stupidly great name. BTOOOM!

because... madhouse.

@Acura_Max:

Haven't watch Btooom! episode 2 yet. I'll begin reading the manga chapters (the ones that the anime cover) to fill in the wiki pages. You can help out if you have free time.

Judging Himiko from episode 1, she is really afraid of Ryouta, and I'm really curious to learn all about her.

It's good to see you're using the guest passes.

@Acura_Max:

Is Himiko's flashback scattered in the manga version? I was reading up to chapter 14 where I see Mitsuo Akechi's dead corpse floating down the river. After that, I went to Btooom Wikia to see the chapter list, and I skimmed the chapters only see some remnants of Himiko's back story like in chapter 16 where Mitsuo tears up Himiko's shirt and then in chapter 22, where I see Mitsuo violating Himiko.

I can't believe I read the most of the manga to search for Himiko's back story.

Edit:

Found it! It was chapter 32. Man, I already read most of the story which robs me of the suspense in the anime. Damn. Oh well, I won't spoil you guys.

@takashichea: Himiko is traumatized by those events and has developed a phobia for men. Because of that, she will have flashbacks when she comes in close contact with men.

On the bright side, we can now talk about the manga! Did you notice that when they introduced Himiko they gave us some fan service; then she disappears until chapter 14. However, the manga artists tease us by having himiko appear on the cover on a majority of the chapters leading up to chapter 14. The manga seems to focus on being a page turner than the anime. It might have to do with the medium in which the story is presented. Since crunchyroll has ordered a full season of Btooom, I think the animators don't have to worry about making it a page turner. While, the manga is released weekly and it does not have the same guarantees as an anime.

Having sampled the first two episodes of Btooom!, I have to say this isn't a half-bad series given the shocking violence, fan service and rape scenes seen thus far. I've seen a few reviewers online compare the premise of the series to Gantz. But whereas Gantz is more gratuitous with its content and its characters are quite unsympathetic, Btooom offers up enough depth to its major characters thus far to give you a reason to care for them, regardless of how tragic or pathetic their lives were before being dumped into the survival game. I haven't read the manga, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this anime progresses.

@Dream:

I heard about Gantz and a crazy weirdo raping aliens. Don't worry, I was just reading the manga to find where was Himiko's origin story. We'll talk about the anime. Though, I should have just looked at the Btooom's Wikia's list of chapters and save myself time. It was in chapter 32 after I skimmed and read from chapter 1.

Edit:

Glad to see you in the discussion thread!

@Acura_Max:

I agree with your thoughts on Himiko's story. It pretty much robs all the suspense when you just drop an origin story right off the bat. One thing good about the anime is that they show how Himiko and Miho took their cosplay photo together.

This is a recap of the scene altercations between manga and anime. I'll put this on the wiki page.

For those who haven't read the manga, it's pretty brutal.

Edit:

Even though the anime toned the rape, the sounds of the victims still makes me cringe.

Her fear of being raped

Himiko's happiest memory

Mitsuo prepares to take Himiko's virginity

We got new characters in episode 3. We see how brutal the game is when trust is an issue and finding food will be a death match.

I like Taira a lot, and I hope he survives along with Himiko and Ryouta.

Interestingly, Kira is an alias that Light uses in Death Note. (In addition to the Death Note connections.)

The episode also reveals the apparent responsible parties for the real life Btooom game, and I have to say I'm a little disappointed that it is the workings of some psycho nerd (creator of the game?) just doing it for the evulz much like Sword Art Online had set up.

@Dream:

Oh, there is another motive behind the creator since I got spoiled by the manga after skimming all the way up to Ch. 32.

Hopefully, they expanded their interest for this game.

I like how you brought up Sword Art Online since players die in the video game while Btooom!, they die in real life.

@takashichea: I ditched Sword Art Online because of said setup. I'm not a big fan of anime having villains who only commit their evil deeds just because they are either crazed loons or they just simply feel like killing. It reeks of lazy writing for me.

Okay, just decided to sample the manga to see what would drive the mentioned psycho nerd to take 30+ random people into a survival game.

@Dream:

You're kidding me? I thought it was for military reasons. It's like Deadman Wonderland again.

@Dream: @takashichea: Bad guys seem to be doing that alot lately. I think it's also a commentary on the modern audience and its obsession with violence, sex and depravity. Awhile back Jersey Shore was canceled after 6 six seasons. Assuming that the show was really depicting reality, the executives may been scared that audience may no longer want to watch Jersey Shore because the people on that show grew up and became real. By the end of Jersey Shore, one of the characters was able to get a secure relationship and the other was able to get into rehab.

  • Something tells me Taira has a dark side. The people who are stuck on that island are there because they were nominated by other people. So far, the other people who were nominated had some gruesome backgrounds. Since he is a main character, chances are that his background might not be that bad, but you have to wonder what it could be.
  • At the beginning, I felt that the show/manga was trying to strike some balance between of power each bim. For example, cracker bombs explode on impact, but have weak explosions. Timer bombers have a 10 second waiting period before being used. At this point, it seems like they have given up entirely on trying to balance everything in regards to the bim. Some bims are far to overpowered like the gas bim and Taira's homing bim.
  • When Sakamoto asked to see Taira's bims, there was a nice shot of Taira looking at Sakamoto's two bags. It explains why Taira distrusts Sakamoto at first without any dialogue.
  • For people who are trapped on an island full of murders and rapists, these people really like to scream and shout. There was one scene where that one lady was able to get a suitcase of food and she decided it was a good idea to shout "yay! I got the food!."
  • For some reason, Sakamoto has to focus on his radar with his mind to use it. I could have sworn in an earlier episode, that they said you had to just move your fingers to use it.

Just seen the latest episode of the show just now which featured Sakamoto's fight with Kira. I think after seeing what happens in the manga and having my personal issues with the anime's pacing, I think I'm gonna drop watch of this. This probably could have worked out better as a two-kour series to allow better buildup of suspense for the different fights seen from the manga and actually follow the manga more faithfully (like the mentioned issue with Himiko's back story, for instance).

@Dream:

That's cool. Thanks for commenting and contributing to the discussion. A two hour series, that's sound awesome. By any chance, did they finished the manga series? I stopped at chapter 35.

Is there any fall anime series that caught your eye and ones that I need to open a discussion thread on?

@takashichea: To my knowledge, the manga is still ongoing.

As for anime from this season I'm presently following, I'm watching Jormungand: Perfect Order, From the New World, Little Busters, Bakuman 3 and Psycho Pass.
