Plot

For those who are new to this show, here is a synopsis written by Buhssuht:

During his time as unemployed, he is best player in the world in game known as BTOOOM, the world's most popular multi-player game. However this is not something his mother is happy with, and so the two of them would constantly fight about Ryouta's future.

One day when Ryouta opens his eyes, he finds himself somewhere in tropical island, with bag filled with mysterious objects. It was revealed later that Ryouta is in part of real life BTOOM! game where people would actually die, and all the people in the game were nominated by other people who wished them to die. The only way to get out of it is to use special bomb named BIM and kill seven other contestant.

I really don't care about this show much but I can't get over the fact that it's called BTOOOM!, that's such a stupidly great name. BTOOOM!

@cynically_happy:

It's cool. I'm just starting a bunch of fall 2012 anime discussion threads to promote the anime and get people talking. Right now, I'm being selective and picking the ones people are really psyched for.

Is there any shows that caught your eye this fall?

I wonder how they will portray the really dark parts of the manga.

@Acura_Max:

I recalled that trailer had a scene where a fat guy was about to grope Himiko. It take me a while to be desensitized to the violence. Does the manga have rape scenes?

@takashichea: Yes, there are multiple scenes, but there are other acts that are just as brutal. There are times in this manga where it makes the Hunger Games look timid.

@Acura_Max:

Oh, I see. I can stomach violence but not rape scenes. I'll start watching the series to see if it hooks me or not. The designs on the Ryouta reminds me of Light from Death Note.

@takashichea: If you like Light, you might like Ryouta. He has many of the same qualities as Light.

I think this is on my list to watch. Hopefully it'll be good.

After watching the first episode, it was not bad. At the end of the episode, the fans are treated to some fan service. We will see Himiko's origin story in the next episode.

Edit:

Seeing Ryouta all addicted to video games and having no job, it reminded me back in high school. I didn't give a damn about school until junior year. I'm addicted to this show. I have to brace myself for some twisted stuff later on.

Edit:

Added Ryouta and Himko to the database. Feel free guys to add to the wiki pages and new characters. Don't forget to inform about the new characters. I don't want to add dupes.

@takashichea: I never really watch anime with any regularity so I usually don't have a chance to watch most of the latest anime releases. However I did start watching BINBOGAMI GA! and I thought it was a pretty funny anime. Unfortunately like most things I watch I stopped watching about 4 episodes in for no reason whatsoever and I'll probably come back to it in about a couple months.

@cynically_happy:

Binbogami Ga! was an awesome ride. Love the parodies, the characters, and how Momiji and Ichiko complement each other. Plus, it does fan service unlike most shows that depends too much fan service and don't have a decent plot or characters to back it up.

It's no problem. Thank you for contributing to the discussion.

@Acura_Max:

Did you watch the first episode?

@Sonata:

Awesome! Glad to have you on board.

@Supreme Marvel:

It's good so far. Though, I see some negative comments about the show ripping off Hunger Games or Battle Royale. I haven't read those yet.

@takashichea: Not yet. I'll watch it tomorrow because I don't have time today. Anyway, I have to wait till tomorrow to watch the video regardless due to not having a premium account on crunchyroll. The goods news is that I've read the manga, so I should be able to keep up. So if you feel like talking about episode one with me, we could compare the differences between the manga and anime.

@Acura_Max:

Ah, I forgot about that. I was about to open one for Magi the Labyrinth of Magic today, but I'll do it next week. I need to check Funimation if they do the same thing.

Hey, do you want me to PM you the 48 hour guest passes? All I need is your Crunchyroll account name. I'm currently sharing the passes with BigHeart711.

It will be awesome if you bring the manga to the table. Also, you can add the info the episode wiki page.

Wow! That is really generous of you. You can send me a pass if it it's not too much trouble for you. My crunchyroll account name is Cheltcan. Also, Cheltcan is my id name for chess.com. If you feel like playing a spot of chess, I'm always looking for others to play with. Warning: I'm a terrible chess player.

Once again, thank you!!!

@Acura_Max:

You're welcome! I'm glad to help out, and I thank you for bringing discussion to the table. I hope you enjoyed your Crunchyroll experience. I believe that CR selection is quite smaller than Funimation in regards of older titles, but CR has more simulcasts. As for chess, I'm not good at it either.

@cynically_happy: you should care the manga is great despite the bad naming so this might be good as well

@takashichea: While, We're on the topic of Funimation, I stoked that they added Robotics;Notes. Looking forward to seeing that tomorrow.

Anyway here are some thoughts on episode one:

Quick Thoughts:

  • The show was pretty fast paced, which is what I expect out of my action shows. Those 30 minutes went by really fast, but I still felt that I get able to get something substantial out of the episode. I'm going to have agree with Sonata. I enjoyed this first episode.
  • The opening song did not troll me like the Rorouni Kenshin op.
  • I know that the villains aren't supposed to kill the hero in the beginning, but that guy with the cracker bomb should have killed the hero. He had what looked like an equivalent to a grenade. Not only that, there was a moment where the main character stood still to surrender. In a way, this episode was like the tutorial of a video. The audience is learning the rules and the AI are terrible.
  • That scene where Sakamoto's mother looks at you was a good scene. It made me feel really sad. She just looked so dead. The relationship between the Sakamoto and his mother reminded me of this movie called Mother (you should see this movie), another story where the son has no appreciation for his mother; the only difference that this mother seemed worn out and not strong as the mother from the korean movie I just referenced.
  • Sakamoto seemed very unlikable in the first episode, but it definitely gets better later. The character development is like the development in Games of Thrones. Sure, the main characters may have done some bad things, but compared to everyone else, they are a lesser poison.
  • Although I can see why people would say that is ripping off Hunger Games/ Battle Royale, you can practically say that about every story. You can say the Hunger Games is ripping off Battle Royale and Battle Royale is ripping off Stephen King's Running Man. The idea of a person trapped on some sort of reality show and being forced to survive is not something new.
