After the dead of Whitebeard during the Paramount War, Brownbeard and his crew attacked Foodvalten Island, that had previously been under the protection of Whitebeard. He conquered the island and seemed to be completely unopposed.
Brownbeard's rule on the island was short-lived when Basil Hawkins, a member of the Eleven Supernovas, arrived and defeated Brownbeard and his entire crew with ease. Though Brownbeard survived and escaped the island, his legs were seriously injured to the point of being unable to use them. He washed up on Punk Hazard Island and found several prisoners who also couldn't use their legs. The island was being run by the scientist, Caesar Clown. While on the island, Caesar had Brownbeard become toe leader of these men.
Two years after the war on Marineford, Trafalgar Law, the latest member of the Seven Warlords, came to the island and made a deal to stay on Punk Hazard. Part of this arrangement was to use his powers to remove the disabled legs of the former prisoners and replace them with animal legs. Brownbeard was given the legs of an alligator.
Brownbeard and his Centaur Patrol Squad attempted to stop the member of the Straw Hat Pirates as they crossed the lake to the frozen side of the island. When the Straw Hats survived the lake, Brownbeard became terrified when he recognized their captain, Monkey D. Luffy. He was then forced to carry them on his back while they looked for their friends. Arriving back at the labs as Trafalgar was fighting with Vice-Admiral Smoker and the G-5 Marines.
Brownbeard was then tied and captured in the ruins of one of the previous labs after the Straw Hats escaped, along with the children Brownbeard thought Caesar was curing of some illness. He refused to believe the Straw Hat doctor, Chopper, that the kids weren't sick and been given an addictive drug. His vision of Caesar as a kind savior was shattered when he sent the Yeti Cool Brothers to claim the children, kill the Straw Hats, and him as well. He was hit with an explosive shot but survived. He woke up just as Caesar had arrived himself to get the kids personally. Brownbeard saved Nami and Usopp from the rampaging kids and confronted Caesar, but Caesar defeated him and left with the kids. He survived again, and he carried the Straw Hats across the tundra as they ran to the labs and escape the poisonous gas Caesar was covering the island with. They barely managed to get inside before they were overtaken.
Once inside Vegapunk's former labs, Brownbeard continued to carry several of the Straw Hats to try and save the children, but Brownbeard wanted to save his men from Caesar. During the search, they were attacked by a small dragon, but it was defeated by several of the Straw Hats.
