Brook is the musician of the Strawhat Pirates. He ate the Yomi-Yomi Fruit. When he died his soul returned, but when he found his body. All that was left was skeleton and an afro.
Brook was once a military commander from the West Blue who joined the Rumbar Pirates, a band of pirates that all loved music. Brook had eaten the Revive-Revive Devil Fruit, but it's power only existed in the death of the user. Along their journey an island whale they called Laboon joined along their journey, but he followed them into the Grand Line. Laboon was left behind at Reverse Mountain in the care of Crocus. Along their adventure in the Grand Line, Yorki, the Rumbar Pirates captain, died and left Brook in command.
Once in the Florian Triangle, the crew was attacked by an enemy using poisoned blades. Those who weren't dead would soon pass away. They all joined together for one last musical performance and recorded it. They all knew Brook could come back and fulfill their promise to see Laboon. However, Brook's revived soul got lost in the dense fog of the Florian Triangle. By the time he found his body, it had become a skeleton. Brook sailed alone on his ship through the Florian Triangle for fifty years.
His first appeared in One Piece Volume 46, CH. 442 "Adventure in the Demonic Sea", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 337 "Venture Into the Devil's Sea! The Mysterious Skeleton Floating Through the Fog". His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Cho, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is performed by Ian Sinclair.
Brook is an extremely tall skeleton dressed in formal attire complete with top hat and cane. At 8' 8.5" in height, he is the tallest member of the Straw Hat crew. Despite having no skin, he still has an afro which he says is because his hair has very deep roots. Brook's style is that of a gentleman consisting of a coat, top hat, pants, and afro which are black while the inner linings of his coat are yellow-orange. The ribbon tied in between his coat and around his neck is blue. The outer covering of Brook's cane sword which he carries is purple. Also, due to his many years of seclusion his clothes have become somewhat tattered.

At some point Brook was captured on Thriller Bark, and his shadow was stolen by Gecko Moria to power the zombie Ryuma. Brook tried to claim his shadow by defeating Ryuma, but he failed. He was eventually thrown back onto his old ship and left alone to drift. Some time after, Brook met Monkey D. Luffy. He invited Brook to join his crew, but he couldn't accept till he got his shadow back. The opportunity arose when the Straw Hat ship was captured on Thriller Bark. Brook raced onto the island alone to once again to find his shadow.
Brook assisted the Straw Hats to defeat zombies by using salt, but he was unable to overcome Ryuma. He was defeated by Roronoa Zoro, and brook got his shadow back. Brook joined forces and helped defeat the giant zombie Oars, powered by Luffy's shadow. With Moria defeated, the crew was attacked by Bartholomew Kuma. Brook was still awake after Kuma's shock wave attack and witnessed Zoro's self sacrifice to save Luffy's life. Luffy once again asked Brook to join the crew, and Brook finally accepted.
After a run in with some kidnappers and saving a mermaid Camie and Hatchan, a former Straw Hat adversary; they were led to Sabaody Archipelago to meet a coating engineer for the Thousand Sunny. Brook and the Straw Hats were soon on a mad dash to save Camie from being sold at a slave auction. This ended in a brawl that had the island swarming with Navy. The plan to go into hiding while Silvers Rayleigh coated their ship was cut off by the appearance of Pacifista cyborgs, Sentomaru, and Admiral Kizaru. When the real Bartholomew Kuma appeared, he was using his powers to cast each crew member away. Brook stood in defense of Zoro and Usopp, but Kuma cast him away as well.
Brook eventually landed on Lazy Bones Island in the Grand Line. The people around thought he was the spirit of Satan, and wanted him to curse the long-arm tribe hoodlums who were stealing from them. Brook tried encouraging them through new music he was writing to inspire them. Though, Brook ended up captured by the long-arm tribe men instead.
The long-arm tribe took Brook to the Sword Mountain Island to be a display as a freak show. Brook sat unmoving, and most people thought he as a fake. When someone threw a paper inside his cage, Brook saw the news about how Luffy had been involved in the Paramount War, then the secret code on Luffy's arm that was for his crew. They were to reunite in two years on Sabaody. Brook began performing for the crowd he created new music to hone his abilities as he prepared for the reunion of the Straw Hats.
In the the two yeas since the crew had been separated, Brook had become a musical rock star known as the Soul King. He arranged for his last concert to be staged on Sabaody, and reunited with the Straw Hats to leave for Fish-Man island. The journey under the sea was filled with sea monsters and pirates. The crew was separated temporarily as they broke into Fish-Man Island past the New Fish-Man Pirates. Brook first ran into Pappagu, then with Luffy and the others before they were all invited to Ryugu Palace by King Neptune. However, they found themselves accused of kidnapping at Mermaid Cove. Brook and the crew defeated the royal guards, but that only made things easier for Hody Jones and his men to stage their takeover. Brook was captured along with Zoro and Usopp in a cage with the room filling with sea water. They escaped when Brook used his astral projection to have Pappagu bring one of Zoro's swords.
The Straw Hats gathered together to help save the royal family from Hody and his New Fish-Man Pirates. Brook mainly either hypnotized their soldiers with his music, then fought with Zeo, a New-Fish-man Pirates officer that could turn invisible. Brook defeated him with his Soul Solid sword, and the crew was victorious against the rest of Hody's men. They celebrated their victory at the royal palace and left the island with a grand farewell from the people.
While much of the crew was abducted after sleeping gas washed over the Thousand Sunny, Brook was left behind on the ship on the ice side of Punk Hazard. He called Luffy, who was on the fire side and told him about the situation. As he was waiting, Brook was attacked by the sword wielding torso of a samurai. He later saved Luffy and the others from the forces of Brownbeard at the lake, and found the rest of the crew with their minds and bodies switched from the powers of Trafalgar Law.
Brook joined Sanji and Zoro to find Kin'emon and came across a giant slime monster who was swarming the island in poisonous gas. They just barely managed to escape into the facility of Caesar Clown before they were overtaken by the gas. Brook joined Kin'emon in his search for his son, but he inadvertently got caught up by the gas. Brook carried Kin'emon's coated body till they escaped, but learned he was still alive when he accidentally dropped him and cracked the shell he was trapped in. The Straw Hats then left Pun k Hazard with Trafalgar Law in an alliance to defeat Kaido, one of the Four Emperors.
He was once a fighter in the surprise-attack squadron of an unknown kingdom. In addition to his sword skill, Brook's lightweight skeleton body gives him great speed and the ability to jump extraordinarily high. His body is so light that he is even capable of running on water, however, Brook is still powerless if submerged in water, like all Devil Fruit users. Brook is also an excellent musician, displaying the ability to play any instrument at a highly skilled level.
Brook ate the Revive-Revive Fuit (ヨミヨミの実, Yomi Yomi no Mi). This is a paramecia-type devil fruit that had no real positive effect until he died. This fruit allowed Brook's soul to return to his body after his death. He really didn't know the extent of his powers, but he realized the power was in his soul. Though Brook is not immortal, he can't die as long as his bones aren't damaged. His body is very literally moved by the power of his soul.
Through his music, he could influence people to sleep or even hallucinate by pressing out his soul.
As Brook trained for two years. he discovered that he could project his soul out of his body. He can travel through walls and can go relatively unseen
Brook carries a shikomizue (Japanese cane sword), and is extremely skilled in its use. He can also combine his shikomizue and violin to create sound-based attacks.
The Soul Solid is the cane sword Brook was given by the Long-Arm Tribe members that were his managers as Soul King.
