Hoffman began her anime career in 1979, playing Clarisse d'Cagliostro in the Hayao Miyazaki-directed film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, often said to be the finest entry in the Lupin franchise. Her most well-known roles include Love Hina's shy Shinobu Maehara (as Ellen Arden), El Hazard's Fatora (as Tessa Ariel), Mahoromatic's titular Mahoro (as Ellen Wilkinson), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's Ryoko Asakura, and Fushigi Yugi's Miaka (again as Ruby Marlowe). More recently she began performing as Nia the elder in the Gurren Lagann dub.
