Origin

A young Jellal and Brain work together to find suitable slaves for Brain's guild.

Brain is the leader of one of the strongest dark guilds, Oracion Seis, as well as its strongest member whose true goal is to obtain Nirvana, a dangerous and legendary magic said to switch the forces of light and darkness which would allow him to manipulate other guilds to attack each other. In the past, Brain worked in a magic development department where he created hundreds of types of magic including the Self-Destruction Spell which he taught Jellal in exchange for selecting and training five slaves with the highest magical power from the Tower of Heaven to become part of his guild and his keys to sealing away his alter ego, Zero.

Oracion Seis Arc

Brain's reaction upon seeing Wendy.

After the Blue Pegasus guild briefs everyone on who the Oracion Seis are, Natsu and the others rush out leaving Jura and Ichiya behind. Angel, who uses Gemini to impersonate Ichiya, takes down Jura. While the guilds of Fairy Tail and the other guilds catch up, Brain and his generals destroy Kristina, Blue Pegasus's flying ship. Out of the smokes, Brain and his generals make their first appearance. As the Oracion Seis' members Racer, Cobra, and Hoteye take down the mages, Brain observes and comments on Erza's impressive abilities.

Brain forces Wendy to choose

After Erza is poisoned and most of mages are knocked down, Brain gets ready to finish them off, but he stops when he sees Wendy hiding behind a rock. Now, a change of plan occurs when Brain kidnaps Wendy (and Happy). At the base of Oracion Seis in a vast sea of trees, Brain asks Racer to fetch something special. Racer delivers a huge coffin and in that coffin lies a blue haired mage who is covered in a mist from Etherion, Jellal . This generates a shocked reaction from Happy and Wendy and Brain demands the latter to heal Jellal because he needs him to reveal the location of Nirvana. When Wendy did not comply, Brain threatened to hurt Jellal because he knew this young man helped her in the past and thus she was greatly indebted to him. With his cunning manipulations, Brain manages to make Wendy heal Jellal.

Brain activates Nirvana.

Although Jellal is healed, he seems to have lost his memories causing him to attack Natsu and Brain. After Brain regains his composure, he sends out a telepathic message to Cobra and tells him to track down Jellal. When Cobra follows Jellal, he sees him breaking the seal to Nirvana and setting up a self destruction spell on it and himself. But Erza appears before him and tries to convince the man to deactivate the spell. During this time, Brain walks in and undoes Jellal's spell and activates Nirvana. When Nirvana activates, it switches the light and darkness of two characters, Hoteye and Sherry.

Brain lies defeated.

After Natsu defeats Cobra, the latter tries to stand back up but Brain takes him down stating that he has no more use for him. He then decides to kidnap Natsu and turn him into one of his generals via using Nirvana. But as he drags the paralyzed Dragon Slayer, Jura and the others show up and confront Brain, with Jura making the first move. After Jura displays his powerful earth magic, Brain succumbs to the mage's power and is defeated. Brain then prays his adopted son, Midnight, will not lose.

Brain's tattoos fade away.

As Jura, Natsu, Gray, and Lucy reach the center of Nirvana, Brain, who mimics Hoteye's voice, tells them to head to the basement to open the door, tricking the group to fall into his trap. Meanwhile, Midnight defeats Hoteye and engages Jellal and Erza. However, Erza defeats him and Brain's tattoos on his face begin to fade away. Meanwhile, Brain's staff Klodoa then starts to shiver in fear when he learns that all six general are gone explaining to Team Natsu that his tattoos represent the six prayers and that when all the generals are defeated, Brain's alternate personality, codenamed Zero, emerges.

Zero takes down Team Natsu.

Unlike Brain, Zero enjoys destruction and fighting and is quite powerful as demonstrated when he easily defeats Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and Happy. After he defeats them, him and Klodoa watch Nirvana as it gets closer to Caitshelter. Zero then commands Nirvana to fire on Cait Shelter, but Hibiki, with the help of Lyon Sherry, Ren and Eve, uses Kristina to shoot one of Nirvana's legs causing it to miss (Note: Zero kills Klodoa before Nirvana fires at Caitshelter). Hibiki then uses magic and sends out a telepathic message to all active members about Nirvana's six Lacrimas located in its legs and explains to his team that they must destroy all six at the same time in order to destroy it. However, Zero intercepts Hibiki's connection and mocks his team stating that they have to defeat him first as he will be waiting at one of the six Lacrimas.

Natsu, using his keen sense of smell, runs to the Lacrima leg where Zero is stationed. They immediately begin their battle with Zero having the upper hand until Jellal arrives and gets Natsu's attention by blasting him with a fire attack. When Jellal tries to convince Natsu that he wants to help him, Zero fires his attack at Natsu but Jellal takes the shot and goes down. Zero then witnesses Jellal transferring his power in a form of a flame to Natsu who gobbles up the golden flames of guilt and quickly launches an attack on Zero, catching him off guard.

Zero is defeated by Natsu.

Zero and Natsu have lengthy battle and both launch their best moves at each other. Zero uses an attack that engulfs Natsu with shadows but as Zero walks away, Natsu burns the shadows with his flames and displays his dragon force. Natsu then unleashes his most powerful attack and rams into Zero all the way up through the ceilings and eventually through the lacrima of one of Nirvana's legs. Zero's is then seen on the floor unconscious with Natsu grinning like the beast he is. Nirvana quickly falls apart and Zero (or Brain) is never seen again.

Powers & Abilities

Darkness Magic

Brain's Magic Seal.

Brain primarily uses dark magic, both in his current form and as Zero along with other unique abilities that makes him a formidable opponent.

Darkness Magic Techniques	Description
Dark Carpriccio	A ray of green with a spiral of fire that is shot from the tips of his index fingers or from his staff.
Dark Gravity	This attack is used to amplify gravity in certain areas. Zero used this against Natsu causing him to crash down to the lower levels of Nirvana.
Dark Rondo	Horror-stricken faces are gathered and then fired which can cover a wide range or hit a single target.
Dark Delete	Numerous spheres of darkness are fired continuously from Zero's hands.
Genesis Zero	Zero's strongest attack. He charges dark energy which he then uses to summon thousands of dark phantoms which engulf the opponent. Its said that this technique has the ability to wipe out the enemy's soul and very existence.

Other Abilities

Self-Destruction Magic - Brain is the creator of self-destruction magic and as so, can undo it without a cancellation code which is required to deactivate it. This was shown when Jellal cast it in an attempt to destroy Nirvana but was reversed by Brain.

Archive Magic - Like Hibiki, Brain can communicate via telepathy and could explain why he has such a vast knowledge of magic, especially Nirvana. Brain is seen using this magic to hack Hibiki's connection with his teammates.

Requip Magic - Brain can change his clothes using this magic ability, similarly to Erza.

Other Attributes

Enhanced Strength - In his form as Zero, he is able to easily pummel Natsu, who, through his dragon slayer powers, is an expert at close range combat, with nothing but mere fists.

Enhanced Knowledge - Brain is quite intelligent and has extensive knowledge of magic, creating hundreds of spells of his own, such as Self-Destruction, in the past. He even had knowledge of Wendy's dragon slayer magic and her history with Jellal.

Enhanced Durability - In his form as Zero, he is able to take brutal and tremendous damage from Natsu while in Dragon Force without much problem.

Enhanced Magical Power - In his form as Zero, he has immense magical power. Its so powerful that when he releases it, the ground begins to shake.
