A Bounty is a price put on the life of someone who is wanted by either the authorities, government, or private organization. It normally calls for the cash reward of the target being turned into the person who set the said bounty price. These announcements are often soon on what is called a Wanted Poster.

Often times terms are set of the return of the target of the bounty. Popularized by the term known as "Dead or Alive". Meaning that this person is wanted to be returned alive or dead. On some occasions the person's life is a requirement. Sometimes their death. Some rare occasions may specify the target not be harmed in any way.

Anime Use

Bounties are popular themes in various anime and manga series. Often times in series where the protagonist is either a criminal or bounty hunter.

One Piece

In One Piece the bounty on a pirate's head is often used as a sign of a pirates strength. The price is controlled by the World Government and Marine officials. The amount of money that is declared in this series is a denomination called "Berries", the currency of this world.

Due to the fact that the price of the bounty is regulated by the World Government. The price can at times underestimate the pirates threat level. If a pirate's actions are never brought to the attention of the World Government. They have no need to raise the price. Making this a reactionary gauge of threat. rather then something more real time.
