Botan is the lovely female guide to the spirit world and Yusuke's close friend, always showing a friendly and upbeat personality. She was also the one to inform Yusuke that he had been chosen to become a Spirit Detective by Koenma.
Having first met him right after his death in the beginning of the series, Botan has been a frequent help to Yusuke throughout his adventures. She most notably provides him with the info/items he needs when tackling a case. Though she is not a fighter like the rest of the main cast, Botan has proven herself to be able to handle herself in a violent confrontation if she is forced to, and also displays a good number of supernatural powers.
Said powers include the ability to switch from spirit to human form, the ability to use spirit items when in human form, healing and the use of spirit energy to create a protective barrier.
Botan's design is said to derive from both Chinese and Japanese mythology.
