An old man who records the hidden history of the world along with his apprentice, Lavi.
Bookman has been the Bookman for several decades. Over 3 decades ago he allied himself with his current enemies the Noah, for history documenting purposes. He is allied with the Black Order currently but even this he admits is for recording purposes as that is the job of a Bookman. Lavi was not his first apprentice. He had at least one apprentice before him who died at some point in time.
Bookman is a supportive protagonist created by Hoshino Katsura for the series, D. Gray Man.
Bookman has had no evolution of note. His lifelong duty is that of a Bookman and he is firm in that duty.
Bookman is an elderly short man with long, pointed, pierced ears and narrow eyes which are always surrounded by face paint.
Bookman is a cold individual although typically respectful. This is due to his duty as a Bookman, which is to watch everything while being objective at all times. But he has shown rare moments of emotion, usually surrounding around Lavi or the few other exorcists he has grown fairly close to like Allen.
After Allen , Lenalee and Miranda had come out alive from their painful ordeal with Road Kamelot, Bookman and Lavi arrived shortly after to assist but were too late. He took interest in Allen Walker because he could see importance in Allen's destiny. He claimed that due to a prophecy, one day Allen would destroy time. Shortly after meeting Allen and the others, Lavi became more acquainted with Allen when Bookman kicked him out of their room for reporting so incompetently to Komui Lee at the European Branch Headquarters.
Bookman and Lavi convened with Allen, Lenalee and Krory in China in their quest to find General Cross Marian. They subsequently met up with Anita, a mistress of Cross' and they take her ship in order to head to Edo, which is where Cross was said to have recently departed for. En route however, the group came across a swarm of Akuma. They initially took them on but realized that the Akuma were not interested in them and instead were just passing them by. Uneasy, Allen and Lenalee pursued the Akuma while Bookman and the rest stayed with the ship.
After they discover Allen's defeat and apparent death at the hands of Tyki Mikk, Bookman revealed what his prophecy from earlier had meant. He thought that it would be Allen who would one day take down the Earl of Milennium. For ths reason, Bookman was most confident of all that Allen Walker was still alive. Indeed he was and he arrived in the middle of a scuffle between the exorcists and the Noah in Edo. This was one of the few times Bookman showed happiness. But it was cut short when all the exorcists aside from Bookman were sucked into a portal, leading to Noah's Ark, a base/dimensional gate used by the Noah.
When everyone exited from the Noah's Ark, Bookman showed arguably his greatest moment of weakness when he was visibly upset and he teared up at seeing Lavi return alive. He returned to the European Branch Headquarters with everyone else.
Bookman's innocence manifests in the forms of a set of large needles. He keeps them stored in his scroll and uses them for combat as well as acupuncture. It is an equipment type of innocence.
Bookman casts a spell with a spell circle and from it comes a mass of large needles that shoot out almost omni-directionally, like a needle explosion of sorts. Given their speed and sharpness, they are surprisingly powerful and it only takes a few needles to kill a level 1 or even 2 Akuma. Level 3 have shown to withstand a greater amount of punishment.
This is more of a defensive type of technique. Bookman completely covers either himself or another in a shell of needles, protecting the person inside. It is also used as mid air platforms for Bookman as he can control the needles in a telekinetic-like fashion, but not himself.
Bookman is estimated to be around 100 years old and for several decades, his sole purpose has been to record to memory major historical events in detailed fashion. As a Bookman, he is highly trained both physically and mentally and even emotionally as Bookmen are taught to harden their hearts no matter how sad or otherwise unpleasant things may be.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Bookman is a skilled acupuncturist.
