Konoha Inoue is a second-year high school with a natural talent for writing who meets the titular book girl and Literature Club president, Tohko Amano, and is forced to join the club as the second member. Tohko can only eat words on paper and Konoha is one of the few people who is aware of this. As such, Tohko makes him write her short stories as "snacks" for her to consume on a near-daily basis.

Tohko also sets up a mailbox outside of school in order to attract young lovers, advertising that the Literature Club would help them with love troubles. She does this in hopes that upon successfully helping a lover, she would have him/her write a sincere report about their experience with the person they loved so that she can use them as sweets for her to eat. Unfortunately, the mailbox actually attracts very complicated mysteries that Tohko and Konoha must uncover and solve, with people's love troubles being a facade for even greater issues.
