Alright, I'll tell you so open up those big ears and listen well. With a man's soul and a strong back, Cure Maid Café celebrates Gurren Lagann: Lagann Chapter (the movie) being released in Japanese theaters on April 25, 2009. They will display various merchandise and costumes and sell things inspired by the movie. Show your manly spirit blazing by quenching your thirst with Simon's blended drink and ordering a Burning Drill Spirit dessert!

When the first movie came out, Cure Maid Cafe had an event dedicated to a Gurren Lagann theme. There were lots of illustrations hung on the walls as decorations and other things on display.

Whether impossible or laughable, this idea should be done somehow in the US. I would definitely go to opening day if there was a café that would do this.

What would you order from the menu if you could visit a Gurren Lagann themed café?
| | Nice Bandai! Looks to be Hybrid to, so we'll get a dub. It's not as cheap as Bandai's releases of Galaxy Angel S and Mave-Chan, which were both 9.99, but at 60 minutes it's twice as  much content, so not too shabby. I'd love to see more lower priced one or two episode OVA releases of this sort from Bandai and others, which makes a nice, cheap quick fix compared to collecting assorted TV volumes or an expensive boxset. Even though I haven't bought or even seen Lucky Star, I'll probably be buying this.

We are about to launch a new User Moderation System (dubbed the Karma System). We are getting rid of the old [ + -  ] system because it was too anonymous and not very effective in reporting questionable/objectionable content to the moderators.

This new system is simply a more efficient way of flagging objectionable content so that the moderators can deal with it.

How The System Works:

  • Every user starts with 0 karma points.
  • If you flag an item, you lose a karma point and the author of the content you flagged loses a karma point.
  • Once you get below -5 karma points, you can no longer flag any content.
  • Once you get below -10 karma points, you can no longer post to the site.
  • Everybody gains 1 point back at the end of every day.

  • Once an item is flagged, it goes to a moderation queue.
  • Forum moderators will monitor this queue to determine if flagged content is OK or if it needs to be removed from the site.
  • If a moderator deems content as OK, he will mark it thusly and the author of that content will receive his/her karma points back. (The reporting user will still have lost their point for flagging the content.)
  • If a moderator deems content as inappropriate, he/she will remove it and the karma points stay (for both users).

So I got my wigs in the mail recently and I have started to mess around with them. This is the first time I'm dealing with styling a wig since other my other cosplays didn't have wigs that needed major styling. You can follow my triumph (or downfall) of my process right here on the Vice. So let's begin with a few pictures.

This is the Femme Fatale Wig from Amphigory. I should have taken a picture of the backside but it slipped my mind. Anyway, it's rather curly at the ends of the wig so I had to straighten it. I found a tutorial online from Katie Bair's website where it shows you step by step how to straighten a wig out.

I boiled some water to roughly 180 degrees Fahrenheit and here's how it looks all wet and icky:

Holy tequito Batman it works!

Amazingly, it is super duper straight now. It took forever to dry though... even when I left it outside.

Now here's where I ran into a bit of a conundrum. As I've said, I never styled a wig before so I was trying to figure out what sections of wig fiber goes to which bang. Yoko has bangs and random pieces of hair all over the place.

From my circled diagram (fear my awesome Photoshop skills):

There are five main sections I have to deal with. There's two long parts that are symmetrical on her head (they're kinda like sideburns but... not). Then there's two side bangs where one floats to the side miraculously (where the skull pin is) while the other floofs up. The last bang is the one in the middle.

So after staring at my wig for God knows how long, I've sectioned them off with hair ties and clips:

It looks quite funky since it isn't styled yet but I kinda know what I'm doing (I think... and hope).

As for my other wig (Punky XL) I ordered:

I started straightening it a bit more since it was folded from delivery. Instead of using Katie's method, I used Catherine Jone's method. It turned out good because it took out all of the random creases that were on the wig. I will be using a large hair clip to attach this wig as a ponytail. When I fake ponytailed it to my real hair, it reaches roughly my bum so I'm happy about the length of it.

And now I fear my pair of scissors because I will now start styling my bangs... It's the moment of truth and I will make my first wig cut today. Wish me luck.

In non-wig news, I got a new computer. Here's a picture:

I'm still not used to the monitor being so huge.

So I taught my first lesson last week. Here's the video, with my reaction to follow:

Analyze and Reflect About the Lesson

Analyze your assessment results and think about possible explanations for why they turned out the way they did.

  1. Were you surprised by anything in the assessment results?  If so, what?  Why was that surprising? On thing that really surprised me was that I was missing a few assessments. Was it my fault? Did the students just not turn it in? I wasn't very surprised that most students were below standards. I could tell while I was teaching the lesson that the students weren't grasping what I was teaching them, but I didn't have time or another class in which I could expound on my lesson.
  2. What conclusions do you draw about how well these students learned?  Be sure to refer to the assessment results to support your conclusion(s). I can see what a poor job I did in getting the information across. The lesson, which I could have maybe taught in a normal class period, should have been shorter; the fact that most students were below standards or missing is proof of this. They did not learn well enough, and it is easy to see that it wasn't their fault: it was mine.
  3. Consider and comment about how each of the following might have affected these assessment results: a) the assessment instrument, b) the lesson, c) the students, d) other factors. The main thing that hampered the assessment results was the lesson. There was not enough information given to them for them to be successful. There was also too much information; as Paula said, "I'm having trouble remembering it all. It's a lot." I underestimated the time I would take trying to pass on the knowledge, and how much I would need to spend on each aspect of the sonnets.

Instructional Planning

Strengths of your planning and why those were effective: One thing I did when planning that I found to be essential to what small success I had is that I looked through every moment, and planned for what could have gone wrong. I am a bit of a worse case scenario person, so it is what I do naturally.

Areas for growth in planning, why, ideas for improvement: I should have practiced it more. I should have realized that what I was doing was too much for people who had little experience with sonnets before. The best thing I could do is get peer feedback on the lesson, and practice it beforehand more.

Thoughts/questions about instructional planning: I underestimated the importance of this step. I needed much more practice and preperation than I gave myself.

Strengths of teaching/implementing your lesson and why those were effective: According to the feedback I had gotten, I did grab students with my personality. I remember setting out to smile and seem happy through the lesson, though the video revealed that my nervousness got the best of me; I lost my smile. I would also say that my flexibility was fairly good. When the sound didn't work, I acted out the clip for the students. When the assessment wasn't completed, I offered ways to make up the grade, and tried to make the students not stressed out.

Areas for growth in teaching, why, ideas for improvement: Teaching in-depth enough. I touched the tip of all of the elements of a sonnet, but didn't get into those elements enough. This heavily impacted the student's understanding of the topic.

Thoughts/questions about teaching/implementation: Through this part of it, I have learned better to pay attention to the limitations of time.

Assessment of Student Learning

Strengths of your assessment and why those were effective: Had I taught the students well enough, I think that the summative assessment I had planned would have been a very good assessment. It allows students to put everything that they learn to use, and allows the teacher to make sure that they understand each of the elements of a sonnet.

Areas for growth in assessing student learning, why, ideas for improvement: I shouldn't have offered extra points. In my head, I figured it was simply a good way to get the students to work until the bell, but simply telling them that it would be great if they would keep going should have been enough. I will not offer extra credit again unless it's needed.

Thoughts/questions about assessment of student learning: Any learning problems that arose in my lesson were no one's fault other than my own.
