As Ichigo enjoys a nice, platonic dalliance in the baths of Tenjirou Kirinji, Shunsui Kyouraku is promoted to head Soul Reaper, but he has a demand to make Kenpachi Zaraki even more powerful than he once was. No worries. He knows just the man - - I mean woman to keep him in line. The first Kenpachi.
Shunsui Kyouraku is an unlikely candidate for leadership of the Gotei 13 in the absence of Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai, but isn't that what makes fiction great. Doing what everyone expected is boring. It's also plausible enough given how many were either immobilized or robbed of their bankaiduring the invasion. I also greatly enjoyed watching as Shunsui gave a scolding to the bureaucratic of the Central 46. No one better take Nanao away from Shunsui, damn it.
Don't let it ever be said that there aren't any strong women in shonen manga. I contest that they are too strong. So much so that you have to wait till the finale to display said power. Am I making some of that? Maybe,...but here we are. Retsu Unohana was the first to hold the name Kenpachi. We finally understand why her quite demeanor could disarm anyone who would dare defy her...requests. She apparently has the power to tame the unrelenting strength of the current Kenpachi.
I remember back when this arc was beginning. I read about an interview with Tite Kubo that he would actually answer the question about the woman Kenpachi named Yachiru after. Well, the answer has been presented, but Kubo had better answer the question about Yoruichi's missing zanpakuto and her bankai at some point. I also hope Tier Halibel gets freed to join this final battle.
I have to have a leap in logic that a bath intending to heal actually rots the bodies, but......whatever. Sillier things have happened in this series alone. The whole concepts seems to exist to further point out that the protagonist is a nigh invulnerable dude. The baths of Tenjirou Kirinji also seem to be opening the door to reviving Rukia and Byakuya.
If you were hoping that Ichigo wasn't going to spend the final arc of the series training up yet again to the point where he needs to come to the rescue. That doesn't seem to be happening. The BLEACHcycle continues.
Much of the past two chapters have been kind of mundane, but the revelations that Kenpachi is going to be taught the art of the sword and Unohana is the first Kenpachi was a saving grace. That's far more interesting than the grand reveal of the Spirit King, Mr. Starry Eyes.
