One of my first exposure to manga/animes, alongside Dragon Ball or Hokuto no Ken, was also Berserker in the early 90s.
 
And I turned just as normal/perfectly fine. *whistles happy at work, and looks back at his university diplomas*

My parents mostly don't know what I watch but they are totally cool with my extensive anime/manga habit. When DBZ was on Toonami my dad would watch it with me. When I bought Afro Samurai my dad watched it with me. Hell, my dad used to watch a bit of the original Dragon Ball when it first came to the US. Now, my mom doesn't watch anything and that's fine because she's the one who buys the boxsets I get for Christmas. The worst (in terms of age rating) I've had her get is Black Lagoon.
 
On another note, my mom is where a lot of the anime/manga buying parents go wrong. All she asks me for is a picture of the cover and the title of the series. She barely takes a look at what a show is rated (but that's fine because I'm of age so it doesn't matter). That is where a number of parents go wrong. Much like this Guide suggests, parents should research what their child is watching or wants before taking the next step.
 
On the positive side, since we know what anime/manga include and are about, the next generation will easily be informed since the parents will so much.
