Here's the first volume of Blame : a lone and strange wanderer seek a genetic terminal in a urban, strange and hostile world. Equipped with a weapon of insane firepower, he fight against cyborg, human and even stranger creature.
The good :
I love the sci-fi in cyberpunk style, so it's always cool for me when something like that come out. The best is the atmosphere : yeah, Tsutomu Nihei has done a great job pulling a world almost totally strange to us. He has been an student architect, and we can see that in his drawing. The action is cool, quick, violent and in some way minimal. The protagonist's dialog are minimal, but it lampshade the loneliness and the cold nature of the world.
There's really a sense of mystery that's been build in this world, and this is very compelling. Each character that Killy encounter teach us something about the world of blame !, yet each one of them uncover most mystery and show to the reader how much this character is ignorant about his own world. Blame ! is an immersive manga.
The bad :
Yeah, this is the first volume of a beginner mangaka, so don't expect much from the art. Sure, the world and buildings are amazing, but the character could have been better drawed. An other stuff from I'm well aware is the appalling of this universe. It will not suit everyone, and mystery world can be very upsetting for those who lack the time and the patience. Some plot came here, and are never really explained. It can be cool, but also very upsetting.
The last thing is the combat, which are sometimes rendered in a confusing way.
Blame ! On his own style, is a very good stuff. A transhuman world with a fascinating potential. The writing and the drawing are good in general even tough we feel it's a first volume. I recommend it for all afficonados of post-apocalyptic world, sci-fi fan and Cyberpunk fanatics.
To the other, maybe it will provide an other way to see action seinen manga, but anyway, This manga is an experience on his own that merit at last a look from the basics manga readers.
So it's a 4/5
