Cursed with near-immortality by the kessen-chu that flow in his blood, Manji seeks to slay 1,000 evil men to atone for his crimes and end his immortality.

Blade of the Immortal is a tale of vengeance set in feudal Japan. It focuses primarily on Manji, a samurai cursed with immortaliy, and Rin, a young woman in search of the men who killed her parents. It has won the Media Arts Award in the manga division in 1998, and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award in 2000 for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material .

When Blade of the Immortal was first being released, most, if not all, manga published in North America was printed "flipped" to accommodate the Western left-to-right reading pattern. The creator, Hiroaki Samura requested that flipping not be done on the series however and instead each panel is cut out and pasted in reverse order. One problem that would have occurred if the series was flipped would be the symbol on Manji's back ( 卍), which is a Buddhist symbol, would have been reversed to be the clockwise-facing symbol used infamously by the Nazis. Even after un-flipped manga became the norm for North American releases, Blade of the Immortal continues to be produced in the same manner as it did in 1997.

While the title, Mugen no Jūnin, literally translates as The Inhabitant of Infinity, the Dark Horse release used the title Blade of the Immortal. That title was eventually adopted by the author and used as the subtitle for the series in Japan.
