Black Lagoon News

Black Lagoon is a franchise comprised of 4 anime series, 3 manga series

I am in the mist of finishing the two seasons of Black Lagoon but right now I'm wondering if I should watch Roberta's Blood Trail? can anyone vouch for this series?

Rei Hiroe is known for his Black Lagoon works, and he has another pen name called Red Bear of the Tex-Mex circle. Under the Red Bear of the Tex-Mex circle, he does a lot ero doujinshi such as Fate Stay Night, Hellsing, and even a Steins;Gates x Dusk Maiden of the Amnesia.

Characters

  • Rock is a third generation Japanese American who learned to speak Japanese for the role.
  • Dutch is an experienced actor - the entry on him also notes that most of the torpedo boat screens are CG, shot in studio against a green screen.
  • Benny is also playing against type and is a bit of a gossip magazine trouble magnet.
  • Balalaika is Russian American and has to turn up to the set earlier than the rest of the cast for her scar make-up.
  • Cheung is the big name actor from Hong Kong who's pretty quiet in person.
  • The twins are playd by a pair of German American girls.

Here are some snapshots of R of Black Lagoon and the actresses for Revy and Balalaika.

In this article, there are snapshots of Rei Hiroe's other works in Black Lagoon and his doujinshi.

Hey Vicers! Forgive me in advance for such a long video but trust me that there is a lot of stuff packed in there. If you don't believe me, just look at the tagged pages at the bottom of this post. I've been quite busy with life stuff but I have been able to work in a ton of reading. But I might have to get back into watching series as I have 7 boxsets sitting on my floor waiting to be opened and watched (plus a number of series on the shelf I still have yet to review). Anywho, lets get to it! (There are a couple topics I talk about that are not in the AV Wiki: Princess Lucia (manga) and Girls of the Wild's (web-manhwa))

WARNING! This video contains explicit language. Also, this video is not edited in any way.

Now you can play with your toys to kill your friends for fun.

--

Playing with or against friends online is one of the major appeals in online gaming to me. I personally play tons of UNCHARTED 3's multiplayer, both Competitive and Co-op. It's a great little time killer. I've never really been into the MMO world on my PC, but I found something while browsing some Japanese sites that really got my attention. A rather popular MMO Third-Person Shooter game called Toy Wars in Japan (MicroVolts in Europe & U.S. / H.A.V.E. in Korea) added four members of the cast of Rei Hiroe's BLACK LAGOON to their list of player models back in early March of this year.

From the trailer, Toy Wars adds living figures of Revy, Roberta, Balalaika, and Shenhua to the roster. The attention to detail is impressive. Roberta uses her classic modified SPAS-12 shotgun that doubles as a shield, but Revy is using a grenade launcher in place of her Sword Cutlass. I only wish they also had an El Baile de La Muerte version of Roberta. You may actually be surprised how many MMOs are made that have anime characters as guest stars. The free to play Korean-made golf MMO Pangya offered costume sets for certain characters that made them look like Lelouch Lamperouge (Zero/Emperor), C.C., Kallen Kozuki, Suzaku Kururugi, and Anya Alstreim, Holo, and Craft Lawrence. Toy Wars even had figures from SUZUMIYA HARUHI and STRIKE WITCHES as an option at one time.

You can see the trailer of these ladies in action below.

If you're at all curious about this game. Check out the gameplay trailer I've posted below. What catches my attention is the impressive level of detail in character customization. I've tried to see if the European MicroVolts version of the game had these BLACK LAGOON models as an option, but I think you can only get these figures by downloading the Japanese version. A search of the forums on the MicroVolts' website led me to a posting that gives detailed tips on how to download this version. The game is pretty popular among the MMO enthusiasts. It's won accolades for MMOSite’s Reader’s Choice Awards in 2010 and MMOGames' Editor's Choice in April 2011.

For some odd reason lately I've felt compelled to spend a lot more time on YouTube recently. And a good bit of that time has been checking out AMVs. It takes a good bit of time and dedication to make them-though some work better than others. As some of you might know, I'm a hard rock and metal fan when it comes to music. So what I've done is search for some hard-hitting AMVs where the music goes really well with the scenes put together. Hope you all enjoy.

Gundam 00 Featuring "Fading Away" by Demon Hunter

Demon Hunter is a band I've been growing into and this is a song I really like. What makes the band a little different is they are Christian metal. Those aren't usually associated together but there are a number of bands like them. I have seen very little of Gundam 00 but when I came across this AMV it just seemed to work. The lyrics play their part but the editing fuses well with the sound.

Sasuke Featuring "Not Ready to Die" by Avenged Sevenfold

A7X is another band I enjoy. This song was originally made for the Call of the Dead DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops but upon seeing this I was surprised how well it turned out. This AMV contains footage from Naruto far beyond where I've watched. However, the content provided with the song does pretty well with the fight scenes and the telling of how Sasuke isn't going to quit until he does whatever it is he wants to do.

Seras Victoria Featuring "In Waves" by Trivium

Trivium is a band I've only just got into since I'm trying to delve deeper into the harder center of metal. The song only came out last year I think but I'm glad someone used it. That being said, the scenes used work quite well since most of what you see is enemy waves coming. Maybe the lyrics don't quite match up you can't really say the intro isn't pretty cool.

Black Lagoon Featuring "Public Enemy No. 1" by Megadeth

I admit I'm not a big Megadeth fan but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the older crews of metal. This AMV features scenes from all parts of Black Lagoon and I find the editing really good. Not to mention just how suiting the song is considering the scenes used and knowledge of all the happenings in the series. In the world of Black Lagoon there is certainly no shortage of heinous characters.

Seras Victoria Featuring "Waking the Demon" by Bullet For My Valentine

Ok, yes, it seems pretty shotty of me to put another Hellsing Ultimate AMV in here but trust me. Bullet is one of my favorite bands, and though this isn't their heaviest song, it is very suiting the scenes pieced together here. I also like the flashes of negative that go along with the drums. Vampires have demons, too, wouldn't you say?

Bleach Featuring "This War is Ours (The Guillotine II)" by Escape the Fate

Escape the Fate is more metalcore/screamo but I like the Guillotine trilogy the band has done. And I know many of you are disgusted I brought in a Bleach AMV considering there are so damn many of them (along with DBZ and Naruto) that it isn't even funny. But this one is a quick combination of many fight scenes and I found the editing to be pretty good.

Conclusion

So that's what I have for you Vicers. I hope to find more well done AMVs to songs I like but I try to keep away from ones made of the Big Four (I haven't found any I like yet for Fairy Tail). When you look for AMVs is there something in particular you want to find? I prefer searching by band name instead of by anime and I have been happy to find so many people like metal and anime enough to put them together.

Holla Anime Vice! I'm very excited for this episode of Dunce Cap because over the weekend I had more time to get things done. One of those things was recording this on-topic episode. But wait, there's more! Not only does this one cover FUNimation's DVD release of Black Lagoon, I am joined by special guest-host, Superevil225! Her and I had a lot of fun making this and even though it's 21 minutes long, we (ok, you Vicers) are worth it.

Usually I spend most of my time on Giant Bomb. I've been easing my way into Anime Vice since taking a liking to Black Lagoon. This post has a foot in both sites so I thought I'd share it here just in case.

-

I'm a guy with many tastes, but I have most of my fun with video games. And a lot like an ill fated metaphor about combining ice cream and pizza, I tend to wonder if other things I enjoy just might make a good game. Considering the crazy range of play styles and tone from one title to the next there is certainly a whole lot of room for just about anything you can throw at it.

So this blog post is about something that could be a game. Take careful note that I say could, because as the saying goes. You could, but should you? Safe money and sanity says, no, but I want to have fun with it anyway.

It Could be a Game: Black Lagoon

Like most video game characters, Revy is really only good at Killing People
Like most video game characters, Revy is really only good at Killing People

Right up front Black Lagoon is an anime/manga series about a gang of pirates that operate out of a city in Thailand made up of mobsters, cartels, psychopaths, and drug dealers. The tone is very dark with a dash of grey morality kinda similar to Grand Theft Auto without the cheeky parodies of American culture. The action is very 80s what with torpedo boats taking out attack helicopters, unlikely displays of dual wielding handguns, and nearly indestructible women sometimes dressed up in maid outfits. I won't drag on about the plot because we have the technology if you want to know more.

Some of the appeal comes from a Japanese salary man out of his element who still finds time to survive using his head and carefully chosen words instead of mountains of bullets. I'll get around to that later. Some of the danger is that this would be a licensed game dooming it to indifference or a quick cash in. Although, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Tons of Guns, and Quirky Weapons Too

Guns? Yes. All of the Above
Guns? Yes. All of the Above

People who are familiar with Black Lagoon might find it a dead ringer for a third person action game or a sandbox type where you explore a city. But before we get that far, one thing Black Lagoon has going for it is a healthy selection of weapons. For me, most action games live and die with their selection of guns or tools of destruction. This is especially true in first person shooters where your "character" is really just a floating gun with a helping hand for reload animations. One of the show's more defining characteristics is the considerable detail spent on the various guns that are fired off from episode to episode. Everything from Berettas, to Browning Automatic Rifles, to Desert Eagles, to Kalashnikovs are well represented.

And then there are a few special weapons that were the partial inspiration for a blog like this. The kind of stuff that makes me wonder why this hasn't appeared in a video game yet.

The Umbrella Shotgun and the Suitcase SAW
The Umbrella Shotgun and the Suitcase SAW

Short explanation, Black Lagoon likes to take a lot of Japanese character types and put dark spins on them. Roberta the maid is no exception. But the important thing is her concealed weapons in the form of a combat shotgun umbrella and an LMG in her suitcase. I don't know how we've gotten this far without a game featuring some sort of concealed combination like this. C'mon video game industry. New Hitman game? Novelty Team Fortress 2 item for the Heavy? Someone get on this. It would be awesome.

Roanapur: A Little Slice of Hell in East Asia

Someone has Already Thought of This
Someone has Already Thought of This

The setting of Black Lagoon certainly leaves a lot of options for game play. Roanapur is a fictional city in Thailand overrun with crime and drug trade. There's no illusion of order as the police are completely useless and the criminal element kill each other day in, day out fighting for territory. The only thing keeping the streets from becoming a war zone is a tight balance struck up by the various mafias. It's not the most original setting as a city of sin and crime, but the international element allows a lot of interaction from all over the world. Setting it in the 90s allows for plenty of soldiers left behind from the Cold War and Communism to apply their training for personal profit.

The natural reaction is something like GTA, which the accompanying image I found on the internet shows someone agrees. I have a different, less obvious idea, which leads me to...

Black Lagoon feat. Dialogue Trees

I would be totally cool with an adventure game where you navigate the trigger happy world of Black Lagoon with nothing but a lot of smooth talking. Adventure games are hot now, right? Give it to Telltale Games. The main character, nicknamed Rock, of this series is really just a normal white collar guy trying to hold onto his soul in a city where people solve their differences with gunfire and grenade launchers. He gets away with a lot of shit using nothing but a cool head and a lot of talking. It would be fun trying to get away with the same stuff through careful use of dialogue trees.

Use [Coat] on [Mad Russian Lady]
Use [Coat] on [Mad Russian Lady]

Or in the case of the game giving you options (including massive failure), make a big a mess as you possibly can.

Sometimes there are No Right Answers
Sometimes there are No Right Answers

Of course, if you want shooting there are more than enough blood thirsty characters in this series to put together a battle of any kind. You could even make it Uncharted-like to take advantage of all the jumping and diving regularly featured in the show.

This is Probably a Bad Idea

Torture Mini Game! What? Too far?
Torture Mini Game! What? Too far?

But there's really no reason to limit game play to one character when there are plenty of quirky people you could rotate around... and that brings me to (probably) the most uncomfortable part of Black Lagoon, Hansel and Gretel. They're a pair of murderous pre-teen twins (maybe) that kill people with axes and a machine gun. They're all kinds of fucked up. And yet... I would be lying if I didn't think playing as them could be fun. Stalking people, luring them into a false sense of security, laying waste to bars and automobiles with a machine gun... and they would be weak to sniper rifles. I don't know what that says about me as a person, but if done poorly it would really cheapen their characters and probably show up on a news program.

Although, this concern probably depends on your familiarity with Hansel and Gretel and your tolerance for violence. I just can't remember many games where you play as murderous children beyond saving with a really, really fucked up past.

The Conclusion?

Black Lagoon could be a video game. It has everything it needs. Should it though? Probably no, considering how most licensed games turn out. The fact that there isn't an actual Black Lagoon game is evidence enough of that. Still, there are a lot of parts of the show I wouldn't mind getting borrowed for other games. If there is one thing from this blog that I would make real, it would be a shotgun umbrella. Preferably for a stealth game. That would be sweet.
