So, we're coming up on summer, and I don't know about you guys, but when it's summer I'm usually more in the mood for light-hearted comedies than for dark dramas or misty romances. So this week I'm going to recommend Best Student Council (or Gokujou Seitokai), which is a quiet favorite of mine.

Best Student Council is the heart-warming tale of a young orphan girl, Rino, and her puppet companion, Pucchan. In the first episode they travel to Miyagami Private Academy at the behest of Rino's myserious benefactor, “Mister Popitto.” There, Rino finds herself in trouble right away as she gets elected to the elite school's doubly-elite Student Council. And thus is the secret of Miyagami Academy: the school is run in its entirety by its student council.

The council, of course, is made up entirely of colorful young women, who are broken up into three (and a half) divisions: the Executive members, the Assault Squad, the Covert Squad, and the Vehicle Squad (which consists of one member, the succinct Cyndi). With the Covert Squad's information, the Assault Squad's tactical genius, the Vehicle Squad's support, and the Executives' commands, the Student Council is ready to take on any weird problem the school might face-- and face them it does.

I'll be the first to tell you that this isn't a show that's going to change your life. It's no Haruhi, and it's not even an Ouran. But it's stolidly enjoyable throughout its 26 episodes as the plot just gets weirder and weirder.

And of course, you can catch it for free! ADV's newly-refurbished Anime Network site has the entire series dubbed (you have to register an account, but you do NOT need the paid subscription), and if you prefer, Crunchyroll has all 26 episodes subtitled.
So check it out! It may or may not blow you away, but it's definitely a fun show and hey, who can beat free?

Well I'd like something to entertain me, so I'll check out an episode or two.

Edit: Curses, foiled again by region specific content.

Hey there!  Just wanted to let you know that Best Student Council and Angelic Layer series are both now FREE in their entirety (both dubbed)  on Anime Network's Online Player for Registered users.  Also we've thrown in full Metal Panic! and Ghost Stories for the Premium crowd.  See ya!

All I know is the one time an episode of it came on a Newtype USA disc waaay back it bugged the crud out of me... I dunno if it was the whole puppet guy or the dub, maybe a combination of both, but something about it just irritated me...

Personally I'd rate Ouran fairly high...

Best Student Council was a fun watch, and I should go by the season box so I can watch it again. If just for how awesome Pucchan is.

Oh, I thought this was going to be a quiz on which anime has the most Absurdly Powerful Student Council (see TV Tropes for the reference), because Asura Cryin' has, like, dueling student councils that contain their own missile-firing cyborgs and (possibly) an aircraft carrier.

I guess I'll look up the show when I have the chance.

Ouran is great, but even it doesn't have the originality of Haruhi, was what I was going for with that statement :)
