Lucy is taking a shower while Cana compliments Lucy on her nice place shocking the Celestial mage. While Cana complains about the lack of alcohol, Lucy narrates about Cana's role in Fairy Tail such as defending Juvia from Freed. Lucy asks Cana if something is bothering her, but Cana asks Lucy if she and her father patched things up. Lucy replies that they have not done much, and Cana stands up and informs Lucy that she is quitting Fairy Tail. Upon hearing this, Lucy screams. The following day, Lucy tells Mirajane about what happened with Cana, but Mirajane explains that she's always like that this time of year. Suddenly, Natsu and Happy run to go on mission, with the former Lucy that she won't come with them this time. Suddenly Gray bumps into Natsu and the two get into an argument until Happy reminds them that this isn't the time for it. Elfman and the others get rowdy and fight over the job posters much to Lucy's confusion, but Mirajane reassures her that everything will be explained.

Meanwhile, Carla begins to demonstrate her precognition ability to Lisanna and Wendy, and she predicts Wakaba will talk to Macao about young people. Actually, Macao and Wakaba's conversation is really about the young female mages' butt and breasts making Lisanna, Wendy, and Carla disgusted. Even though Wendy and Lisanna congratulate Carla, Carla admits that she cannot control it perfectly. At the same time, Erza and Pantherlily have a duel, with the latter learning what the power of an S class is while Gajeel brags about Pantherlily to Erza.

The next day, the guild gathers and waits for Makarov's announcement as others such as Alzack are anxious to hear it. As the curtains rise, Makarov announces the participants of the S-Class examination, and the roar of the audience follows. After it gets quiet, Makarov explains that this year's exam will take place on Tenroujima.

Suddenly, Carla gets a vision about Cana crying, Natsu's frightened look, and a mysterious mage.

With the eight mages chosen, Mirajane explains that the eight wizards must pick a partner. In addition, Erza states that the person must be a Fairy Tail member and not an S-Class wizard. Then Juvia wants to withdraw from the exam, and Lucy tells Gray that Juvia wants Gray to be her partner. This causes Juvia to think Lucy is aiming for Gray's love. However, Loke appears and explains that he is Gray's partner since Gray had made a promise to Loke a year ago. At Natsu's training, Natsu is strapped to a tree while Happy announces that he will test Natsu's durability by pounding him with boulders from a hill. Back at the guild, Loke reveals his green stamp on his back to prove that he is a Fairy Tail member.

Back at the guild, Jet and Droy argue over who will be Levy's partner. To their shock, Gajeel barges in and tells her that he will crush the competition, but Levy thinks she can't help him due to her lack of strength. Gajeel picks her up and promises her that he will make her big. Somewhere in Magnolia, Natsu stares at the snowy sky, and at the same time, Wendy walks home with Carla. Mest approaches Wendy and introduces himself as Mystogan's apprentice. Back to Natsu, Happy calls Natsu for dinner, and Natsu tells him that he has his chance to finally become an S-Class mage.

Lucy tries to comfort her, but Cana tells Lucy that she is the first mage to have failed four times. She tells her story to Lucy which is not told to the viewers. As Cana cries about not seeing that certain person if she fails the test, Lucy becomes Cana's partner to help her pass the test. When another day passes, the eight mages arrive at Hargeon Port.

  • Juvia thinks Lisanna is after Gray.

  • Change of Events: In the manga, Natsu stare at the snowy sky after Wendy gets recruited. The opposite occurs in the anime.
  • In the manga, when Gajeel picks up Levy and it reveals her fairy tail stamp on her back. Compared to the anime, Gajeel picks up Levy, but the camera focuses the front of Levy, so her stamp is not revealed.
