25 episode long anime adaption of the Golden age arc of the Berserk manga.
The angle that the anime of Berserk took was one in which we get to understand Gut's life story and kinship with the rest of the original Hawks Raiders leading up to the eclipse, as it covers the story's first arc exclusively. Numerous supernatural elements of the story were omitted in the anime, including (oddly enough) the Skull Knight, among various (frequently unpleasant) details concerning the characters and overall plot which provided for an even darker tone, as seen in the manga. The Black Swordsman arc is only touched upon in the first episode (in which Puck is neither seen nor mentioned) , before shifting gears to cover the Golden Age arc from the second episode to the twenty-fifth.
A 26th episode is said to have been in the works to elaborate on how Guts and Caska survived the eclipse, and to set the tone for the next arc. However since the anime had gone over its budget by the 25th episode, and suffered poor rating during it's airtime in Japan, this never came to fruition.
