Battler Ushiromiya is the protagonist of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, tasked to prove that magic is not killing people on Rokkenjima.
Battler is the son of Rudolf and Asumu Ushiromiya, and the seventh in line for succession to the Ushiromiya title. He, alongside the other successors, are attempting to succeed Kinzo Ushiromiya, the head of their family. However, he was thrown headlong into the Witches' Game alongside his family, and serves as Beatrice's primary competitor, trying to disprove the use of magic in the murders that occur on the island. His catchphrase is Dame da zen zen dame da (It's useless, it's all useless). He tend to use it to disprove his oponents argument.
The character was created by 07th Expansion for the series Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. He was designed and illustrated by Ryukishi07. In the anime and video games, Battler has been played by Daisuke Ono.
Battler is introduced here as the main character of the series, he cames to the family conference after six years; these 6 years he abandoned his Ushiromiya name, because of the desicion of his father to marry with Kyrie few months after her mother Asumu died. He is pervert, carefree and joker, also he is a gentle person. When the story of the Witch Beatrice is told by Shannon, he express hi skepticism, he maintains it all the story even in front of the murders, also he shows great detective skills. He survives until the nine twilight where, mysterious butterflies appears before him and his cousins, Battler tried to kill them with a shotgun, however whenever one butterfly was shoted it splited in more.
He suddenly appears in the living room, with Shannon, Kanon (both supposedly to be dead), George, Jessica and Maria, it is told by them that it was a tea party hosted by Beatrice itself. Battler doesn't believe it and demands the witch to appear, Beatrice answer his call and appears before him, however Battler still deny her stating that she is a kind of existence that can only be completed when all the persons in the island believe in her existence. Beatrice then shows to Battler again all the murders, and challenge Battler to prove that all crimes were made by human means, and no magic.
Battler is now engaged as a player in a battle against Beatrice, while the Battler piece in the gameboard doesn't have much relevance in this arc, it also survives 'till the nine twilight, he is labeled as the culprit by Rosa, however he is able to calm her down. In the meta-world the player Battler is constantly being harassed and humilliated by Beatrice, who introduced a new rule to the game, the red truth, anything said in red is the truth and no proof is needed to that. By this move, Battler's arguments are easily broken, however he sometimes is able to put good theories, by the move called Devil's proof, that states that is impossible to prove the unexistance of something. The piece in the board get drunk after all the murders and is leaded by Genji to the human Beatrice that appeared in that game, after that the player Battler surreders to Beatrice, who naked and chaind him, treating him as some kind of low pet, at the end of the banquet he is eated by the goats-men.
It seemed that Beatrice had win, however when she was torturing Rosa, Battler reappears with a new will to continue the fight, retiring his surrender.
The piece Battler doesn't had much relevance in this arc, 'till the end, where he is killed by a crazy Eva. The player is sick with Beatrice's behaviour, he even slap her because she was laughing about the first twilight; in this arc Ronove appears, and it seems that besides the oposite sides of him and Battler they start to get along. After the myth battle between Virgilia and Beatrice he gets more and more confused and even frustrated, however Virgilia gives to him some tips to fight against Beatrice, such as the Schrodinger's cat theory. When Eva-Beatrice takes the power, Beatrice tried to confront her and lost, but Battler who felt pity about Beatrice decided to leave their rivalry behind to help her in the fight against Eva Beatrice, angry because of this, Eva Beatrice summons the siesta sister to kill Battler, however he manifested a barrier conceptually strong to block any fiction even from gods (his barrier carried a value of endless nine superior to the most poweful gods). Then with the help of Beatrice and Virgilia was able to break almost all Eva's red truths, however he wasn't able to break the statement of Nanjo's death, because of this, Beatrice asked him to cover his ears, while she used red truth to deny the existence of witches in front of a crying Battler who had started to accept her as a friend and rival.
In the last part he appears together with Beatrice in the mansion covered by golden butterflies, and all characters, humans and no humans are there clapping and celebrating, it was necessary the sign of Beatrice and Battler to open the golden land, however it wasn't so happy as it looks, all was a trap prepared by Beatrice and Virgilia, who forced him to sign, but suddenly Ange appears and stop the whole ceremony saving Battler who was atonished because all Beatrice's good behaviour was a facade to deceive him.
At the contrary of what Beatrice believed because of a prank of Ronove, Battler still has his fight spirit even after the facade of Beatrice in the previous game, now he is helped by Gretel (who is in really her sister Ange that came from the future), in this game Beatrice allows Battler the use of the Blue truth, used to create theories agaisnt the witch's statements. Now with a weapon to counter attack his oponent, Battler enters in the fourth game, however this time Beatrice will trick Battler by not telling some red truths when she is asked, at least Battler use the blue. In game, piece Battler, together with Jessica, Maria and George are called to a test to see who is more adequate to be the new head of the Ushiromiya family. After Jessica's and george's test is over he is called by Beatrice who ordered him to go to the front door of the mansion to try his test; in the way he found the dead bodies of some members of the family. When he encounters Beatrice, she revealed him that he had a sin commited 6 years ago, because Battler didn't remember it, she gets depressed and leave alone Battler, after that he examinate the rest of the bodies while he is drunk, because he drank at the depressive situation. In game Beatrice reveals with the red truth that Battler indeed commited a sin 6 years ago, and that is because of that sin that the people in the island are killed, she also revelas that Ushiromiya Asumu isn't her biological mother, this causes Battler to collapse and to doubt about his own existance, so he auto-denies himself dissapearing; but Lambdadelta and Bernkastel rescued him before his complete elimination, he is still shocked, so Gretel reveals her as Ange using the red truth; because Bernkastel allowed Ange's existance only if she didn't reveal who is in really, Ange sacrified herself and dissapeared, this causes Battler to get angry and he challenge Beatrice (who is still depressed because Battler didn't remember his sin) to a final duel, where all truths will be revealed.
At the front of Ushiromiya mansion the final battle between Battler and Beatrice beguns, his blue truths in this battle took the form of conceptual stakes that impaled Beatrice everytime that Battler stated his theories, being his main weapon the theory of the existance of a 19th person in the island. However any time that Beatrice was able to deny Battler's blue with her red in the shape of a sword, she removed the stakes impaled; Beatrice uses red to deny the existance of 19th person destroying all Battler's theories and used Kinzo as argument to prove that he was alive in the fourth game, so a phantasmagoric Kinzo that transformed into a giant black dragon appeared as a conceptual representation of Beatrice's statement; But Battler used blue to destroy the dragon and prove the death of Kinzo (later confirmed in red by Beatrice), after that he used twisted logic to present irrational theories against Beatrice, however as she was tired of the game, she only accepted the theories and ended impaled by a giant stake that represented the combined strenght of all Battler's statement. At the end a ghostly Beatrice separed from her body and asked to Battler about her real self; Battler hug her and accepted her last riddle promising that he will resolve all the misteries.
Battler at the beginning is showed hopeless trying to understand the last moves of Beatrice, who was now in some kind of vegetal state. Then when Lambdadelta proclames herself as the new Game Master, he refuses to participate giving his place to Bernkastel. The piece arrive to the mansion as usually, however a new person was added to the gameboard, that was Erika; together with Erika, Battler manages to solve the epitaph and found the hidden gold, thus the family started to discuss what to do, while the majority approved for Battler to became the new head of the family, Natsuhi and Krauss opposed fierecely at the idea; Battler gets dissapointed when he noticed the real behaviour of his parents and familiars; and stated to dislike Erika when he noticed her twisted mind; then he went to sleep; but in the next morning Battler awakes Erika and the whole family, because he shouted a big scream when he found his three cousins and his aunt Rosa deads in the same room where he was sleeping. Later, the family is triying to discover the location of the missing Kinzo, at the same time, a debate is ocurring between Natsuhi, Kinzo and Beatrice against Erika and her new furniture the Eiserne Jungfrau; Beatrice was hopesless losing, then Battler appears to save her and Kinzo, as a proof of a possible escape to Kinzo, he jumped through the window of the third floor of the Mansion; while the human Battler just jumped, the Meta one was battling with Dlanor at the same time that they was falling; the battle ended with Battler's victory. After that there is not more development of the piece Battler.
The player Battler was angry because of Bernkastel's methods who revealed her true personality and placed Erika as her own piece, then she carries him to the Sea of fragments, where he observes how Bernkastel solved the epitaph using her piece Erika and piece Battler, who looked more smart because of the new player. Later he had a little talk with Virgilia and Dlanor where he received more clues about Beatrice from Virgilia, and he learned Dlanor's real behaviour, showing to her a new respect, recognizing her as a worthy oponent. When the court of illusions is opened by Lambdadelta, he hopeless tried to show Natsuhi's innocence, however he ended defeated by Dlanor and Erika, Battler even used the red truth gaved to him by Virgilia, that stated that Natsuhi wasn't the culprit, however, being a normal human he wasn't able to use reliable red truth, so it ended denied by Knox's decalogue; at last, Dlanor impaled him with a red longsword.
In tea party, Battler was agonizing due to the sword; in his last moments he analized all the games, using the Knox decalogue that Dlanor previously explained to him, and then when he recognized that he loved Beatrice, he was able to reach the deepest part of the story, gaining the real truth; with Beatrice's last sacrifice and the knowledge of the truth he regained the will of fight, then the red longsword that impaled him turned gold and retrieved itself from the body, recognizing Battler as his master; now that he knew the truth, Lambdadelta gave to him the title of Endless Sorcerer and the title of the territory lord of that fragment. Battler confronted Erika and Dlanor again this time with the knowledge of the truth, with a new theory that said that he was the man from 19 years ago. Against Erika he received help from Beatrice's previous furniture (Ronove, Gaap, The seven stakes) and Virgilia the ones who heavily damaged Erika with truths; then Battler finally exposed the dissapearance of Kinzo's body by using the Golden truth that said "I guarantee that this is Ushiromiya Kinzo's corpse" , defeating Dlanor, though he didn't kill her. At last Erika was able to create a new theory that was able to exist at the same time that Battler's truth, so Battler accepted her new challenge, and he stated that he will command the sixth game as a game master.
Now as the game master, Battler starts to write the sixth game, though he founds difficulties while doing it; also he recreated a Betrice using the endless magic, but this Beatrice wasn't the same as before, it was more like a nice child; this makes Battler upset who reject this new Beatrice. Then the game begins, this time Battler is the GM and Erika his rival; to prevent Erika's strategies, he made the game in such a way that Erika is at disadvantage even wi th the detective's proclamation. In this game, a love test was created to George, Jessica, Kanon, Shannon, Battler and Beatrice in the one, everyone of the six must kill a member of the family; Endless sorcerer Battler killed himself as human, also he recognized the new Beatrice as someon to love. Due to Erika's act Battler felt pitty for her and allow her the use of duct tape in three rooms. Then the first twilight occurs, and on of the victims this time is Battler; however, Erika was able to notice that this was a prank, and tried to trap Battler in his room. Battler made himself to dissapear for the room, with the excuse that one of the five other victims of the first twilight was alive and helped Battler to escape, but Erika assured to kill the other five victims, leaving Battler with no escape, and as he created a contradiction in the story, he was trapped in a Logic Error, from the one he will never be able to escape, at least that he explain the error in a logic way; it is unknown how many time passed Battler trapped in the logic error, though it can be guessed that were many years. After the events, Bernkastel offered Battler as husband to Erika, then a wedding ceremony between an evil Erika and an emotionless Battler began. Due to the development of Beatrice's story, she was able to regain herself, and then she saved Battler from the Logic Error, revealing the true nature of Kanon. A final duel between Battler and Beatrice against Erika began, because Erika wasn't able to understand the true nature of the two servants, she was finally defeated by Battler and Beatrice in a gun's duel. In the end, a wedding is arranged between Beatrice and Battler, becoming wife and husband.
There is not much development of Battler in this arc. At the beggining Battler appears with Virgilia celebrating Beato's funeral; he placed a book in the coffin. A new game is created by Bernkastel, in this one Battler didn't came to Rokkenjima; when Clair Vauxof Bernardus relates "her" story, is revealed that Shannon felt in love with Battler six years ago, though Battler was just playing by saying romantic stuff, after that year Battler never returned to the island, though he sended letters to the family, but no one to Shannon, causing her to depress.
In the tea party, in the truth showed by Bernkastel, Battler is phoned by Kyrie to participate in the test to became the next head of the Ushiromiya family; supposedly he was to encounter in the chapel with Rudolf who was going to convince him to accept the massacre and to help them, however he encounters with Kyrie when he was going to the chapel; Kyrie wasn't trustful of Battler, but if something happens between them in this moment is unknown.
At the end Endless sorcerer Battler appears to console a lonely Ange of 6 years old, then he promised to her, that this story wasn't a cruel or sad one
Initially a normal human, maybe a bit athletic (as he can jump from the window of a third floor and stay unhurt; happened in the fifth arc).
However in the conceptual metaphysical world he has showed a variety set of abilities, the first one an endless nine magic resistance barrier, based on his skepticism, he won't recognize the existence of magic and witches, and this barrier protected him from every magic attack, is said that not even the gods would hurt him; He also can use the blue truth, which is the method used by the human side to negate witches and magic, this blue truth sometimes take the form of a sword, others the form of a stake (only the stake is showed in the anime), so it can be considered a kind of conceptual weapon because it's used to attack a concept (the opponent's argument).
In the last part of the fifth arc, Lambdadelta granted him the title of The Endless Sorcerer Ushiromiya Battler, and the territory lord of the fragment, because he reached the deeper point of the mistery, the real truth; because of this, he adquired all the abilities of a witch, like the using of magic, and the free use of red truth; and also, because of his knowledge of the real truth, he adquired a golden longsword, a conceptual weapon able to strike with either red or blue truth, and the use of gold truth, only possible for the game master.
Lately, as the game master of the sixth game is showed how he can create a new game, a new tale for the Rokkenjima incident, and interfere freely with the events that occurs on the game board; he also at this point rules over previous Beatrice furniture: Ronove, Gaap, and the seven stakes of purgatory.
