A controversial movie based on the novel and manga of the same name by Koushun Takami.
Battle Royale is set in the distant future, when Japan has become a fearful, totalitarian-ruled country. Afraid of opposition from its youth, the government enforces the Battle Royale program, wherein one random school year, from one random school, is chosen to partake in the program. They must fight to the death until one remains. This is designed to teach those who watch it humility and respect, and to instill a fear in children of defying authority.
During the time this movie begins, the class chosen to partake in the battle consists of Shuuya Nanahara, Noriko Nakagawa, Takako Chigusa, and several other students in a total class of over 40 from the Kanagawa Prefecture. On the guise of going on a class trip, they are sedated and sent to an island, where they must either find a way to escape the island, or kill each other in an attempt to live.
