A Baseball Bat is easily considered one of the two most important items in the game of Baseball. The second obviously being the Baseball itself. It can be held by either a right or left handed player. The person stands at home plate and attempts to strike the ball, thrown by the pitcher.
A baseball bat can be normally made out of three different materials. Most commonly made of a strong wood, either maple or ash. They can also be constructed out of metal, plastic, or rubber. Metal bats are normally used in the game of Softball. The plastic and rubber kinds are created primarily for children's toys. The official game of baseball only recognizes the use of wooden bats.
The gold standard for baseball bat construction is popularly believed to be the line of bats call the Louisville Slugger. Created by the Louisville Slugger company based in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Baseball Bat can be used as a hand held weapon, such as club. While in the game of baseball the bat is required to be held with both hands to achieve maximum effectiveness. In an attack a bat can be just as vicious and deadly with a single hand grip.
The Name
In Japan the game of Baseball is called "yakyuu", but the bat is normally refereed to simply as a bat (batto). This word can also apply to the bat in a game of Cricket, or the paddle in table tennis.
