The story now flashes back to an earlier part of Guts life. He is a kid working as a mercenary and in one battle he defeats the might Pazuzo and is spotted by Griffith.
Later on Guts is leaving the battlefield and Corkus with some of the hawks decide they will rob him. It soon becomes clear they will not beat Guts and Caska steps in to help, however she also no match for him and it is not until Griffith stabs Guts that the fight stops as Guts collapses.
Griffith orders Caska to sleep with Guts to keep him warm and the next day Guts challenges Griffith to a duel.
