Not sure how this isn't based on a video game, but it's sure fun to "play." Ay-oh!

Baka and Test is pretty funny.

I wish someone would go back to steins;gate, I finished it, and its one of the best animes this year IMO.

Interesting the way you broke down the way the comedy worked for you. Its a nice comedy and does take itself too seriously (Besides the last few episodes of season 2).

Here are some anime you may want to check out.

  1. Usagi Drop
  2. Eden of the east
  3. Bamboo Blade
  4. Blood +
  5. Maria Holic

All can be found on Hulu besides Usagi Drop which is only on Crunchy Roll.

Good video. I really like the comedic style in Baka and Test, especially when it concerns Hideyoshi. I've done multiple spit takes because of him.

Though I liked the first season, the second season isn't really doing much for me though. I got kinda bored in the hot springs arc and this new arc is pretty boring as well. some nice jokes here and there but so far these two arcs have had all their episodes feel pretty much the same.

Oooooo... CR's player is a pain to deal with. Thanks for the recs. I might check the rest of those out next. I've actually received the EDEN OF THE EAST movies on DVD and will be reviewing them soon.

Maybe I should've been drinking something while I was watching...

metalsnakezeroon Sept. 14, 2011 at 8:42 p.m.

@Tom_Pinchuk: I recommend watching the TV series of Eden of the East before the movies since the movies answer a lot of questions that are brought up in the series. CR can be a pain but it is worth it for Usagi Drop.

I'll be honest. I had never heard of Baka and Test before this. That just means that I'll probably follow the Watch & Learn.

As for recommendations, There are two series I know about on Hulu that could be shelved for a dry period. FLCL is six episodes and...insane? I don't know how to describe it, but I think one interpretation I read somewhere said it may visualize puberty and how strange that time is. Again, it's a very strange show.

The other one you probably won't pick up. Afro Samurai is five episodes and has an pseudo-epilogue movie. I say that you probably won't pick it up because it is VERY heavy on cursing, gore, and nudity (there's a sex scene that is pretty much a conveniently placed sheet away from an adult rating) which is basically what every teenage boy wants to see. It'll also stretch your suspension of disbelief (general setting is feudal Japan time-wise, but the main character fights a guy using RPGs and cell phones exist). I only recommend it because, I don't know, it's a okay series to watch if you just want to veg and I like the main character's side-kick.

@Tom_Pinchuk: oh, crap, i didn't realize it was you who did it, sorry, it wasn't meant as an insult...for some reason I thought it was someone else who had started the steins;gate watch.

I'm not sure how many episodes volume 1 contains, but the later episodes drop the "school fights" and just have more general anime humor. Also Yoshii's sister is pretty great.

sotyfan16on Sept. 15, 2011 at 2:46 a.m.

I watched the first 2 episodes or so a long time ago. Don't remember why I dropped it but I should go back and catch up.

@Tom_Pinchuk:

I think you should check out Basilisk. It's another FUNi title and is up on Hulu and Instant Watch. In short, I would describe it as a gritty supernatural samurai version of Romeo and Juliet. I did a Dunce Cap on it, too.

I didn't actually like the first couple EDEN episodes I saw. I find the whole amnesiac rigmarole to get boring pretty quickly. I figure it might be interesting angle to watch these cold, but we'll see.

Ha ha. Seriously, no worries. I don't take any of this too seriously.

People keep talking that girl up.

We'll see. There so many good series to watch, and only so much space.

I actually did already review FLCL for the column back when it was called "What the F@#$ Did I Just Watch?!"

You don't know my tastes too well if you think any of that would turn me off AFRO SAMURAI. I'm the guy who loves BLACK DYNAMIC. I haven't watched it for here because I guess it's technically an American show?

I'll look into it. Like I said, too many good shows, too little time.

The previous title describes FLCL perfectly. As for Afro Samurai, I wasn't trying to insinuate that you wouldn't like it. I was just putting a warning for younger viewers. That being said, I don't know the average age of the community so this could be a moot point. I think you're right in that it is technically an American show if only because it wasn't produced in Japan and the original run had English voice acting, but it's based off of a Japanese doujinshi. So, the manga is Japanese, but the anime is American. If you do pick it up, I hope you enjoy it. Like I said before, my most favorite character is probably Ninja Ninja.
